I have a Great Dane puppy (6 weeks). I've done a lot of research on it and what I've read is to not feed them puppy food. And my breeder said to not feed them puppy food but adult food.

But my vet said to give him "large breed" puppy food to give him more calcium for his fast growth.

What is your experience and who should I listen to?

So you're not going to listen to the vet? I think I'd go with the vet on this one.

I think I would have to go with the vet's recommendation...

I switched my Great Dane to adult food at about 10 weeks. General consensus is to start adult food much earlier than in smaller breeds.

This. And we're a lot cheaper to ask than those pesky "doctors".

do you really need a doctor to tell you how to feed a dog?

Ordinarily I'd listen to the vet, but Great Danes are kind of a special case, and if he's not familiar with them, his advice might not be the best. Here's some info on feeding Great Danes. LINK

That's exactly one of dozens of articles saying not to.

Maybe I should wean him off of puppy food early?

Also, I never said I'm not going to listen to the vet lol. I bought the puppy food but want more people's opinions that have experience with Great Danes / large breeds

From AKC

quote:

What you feed your dog is an individual choice, but working with your veterinarian and/or breeder will be the best way to determine frequency of meals as a puppy and the best adult diet to increase his longevity.

In this instance, I'd listen to the breeder

With a dane you want to feed them food with less tha. 24% protien, and around 1% calcium. I feed mine 4health large Breed from tractor supply. do not go more tha 24% they will grow to fast and you'll have problems. Go grain free to save your yard from excess laND mines

Ps: never feed a dane puppy food! Owner if two danes!

Ummm, all dogs are different. I doubt any large breed needs to be on puppy food for a year either.
Had to start feeding my golden adult food at 5 months, and that was the recommendation from the vet too.

ETA: OP, if the breeder has been doing this for a while, follow his advice.

feed him good food. call the manufacturers and ask what they recommend. some of the foods have too much calcium in their puppy food for large breed dogs.

Seriously man, you can screw up your dogs growth by feeding him/her the wrong food. Does your breeder show her dogs? Is the breeder just a breeder on the side too make extra funds? Don't trust someone who doesn't have a vested interest in the breed. Do some research. If you are in baton rouge go to jefferson feed pet store and talk to those guys. Very informative.
I tried to feed a couple of brands (upper end) and they all have too much calcium in them for large breeds. I settled on blue buffalo as their calcium content is in line with whats needed for large breed. Now take it, mine is a GSP... So, it would be even more important for you to find the right kind of food. I would definitely feed puppy though.... there is a reason there is puppy food.... has nutrients and calcium levels to grow the dog properly.
