I have two Great Danes. I've fed them purina with lamb as a puppy and pedigree as adults. They're doing fine.

There are some foods out there that are all life stages, that probably what they were referring to. Taste of the wild is one example of an all life stages food

I feed my GSD Fromm Large Breed Puppy. It has the correct amount of calcium and phosphorus large breed puppies need. There are several good companies that make that type of food.

I fed my saint bernard all sorts of random stuff when he was growing up. Turned out fine.

OP, were you live at? I can put you in touch with a Vet that owns Great Danes.
Always keep the dog on the lean side.

I just consulted with my Vet (she's sitting next to me) and said large breed puppy food formula for the first year.

Most vets only take one nutrition class during vet school and it is a general nutrition class not specific to dogs. In general they don't know much about pet nutrition.

I have a mastiff. The breeder had her on Eukanuba puppy food, so we kept her on it before transitioning to adult food.

Your vet is an idiot.
High protein puppy foot encourages rapid growth.
You do NOT want that.
Any competent vet who isnt pushing science diet will recommend a good under 25% protein that happens to be grain free.
At the very least feed a no corn, wheat, or soy food.
Danes are notorious for their health issues.
If you want to supplement the food with something, coconut oil and brewers yeast works great.
I rarely make a serious post in the OT, but your vet is dead wrong. She sounds like the type of vet who charges 60 bucks for a simple vaccination too.
Feed canidae, 4health, blue buffalo, wilderness, or...given that it's a dane and will soon eat you out of house and home... Diamond Naturals Grain Free. Its 30$ a sack and a GREAT food.
Avoid the beef, it seems to give all dogs gas.
Get a new vet!

I have a six month old Rottie. He was on Royal Canin from the breeder. He seemed to become uninterested in it at about 3 months so switched to Diamond large puppy and his coat and skin have improved and he finishes every bowl. I'm happy with this food for the first year.

I have a dane, large breed puppy or adult food is fine. Regular puppy food had too many calories and makes them grow faster than they are supposed too. Hope this helps and enjoy your dane. They're great!

So you're not going to listen to the vet? I think I'd go with the vet on this one.
Why would you not listen to your vet?

Any vet who whores themselves out and pushes science diet likely can't be trusted for nutrition advice?

This!!!
I have Mastiffs and you want large breeds to grow slow...rapid growth leads to joint problems.
