Vets have little training on nutrition and even less on giant breed dogs. There is too much protein in puppy foods which will cause numerous issues in a giant breed dog. I have had or raised English Mastiffs for over 10 years and know something about nutrition. Look at the ingredients of the food you are considering buying and make sure the first 2 ingredients, preferably the first 3 ingredients, are some form of meat. On a side note, try to hold off on spaying and neutering till the dog is at least 2 years old too. Congrats on the new pup.

How about take the advice over pet nutritionists over someone who gets paid to sell over priced Ol' Roy and who only stands to make more money by giving you poor advice?

Farm vets typically do the opposite. They aren't in it for money.

We don't own any dogs under 100lbs, and our largest is well on his way to 180+ when he reaches full maturity.

Even feeding a lower protein high quality food, he still put on 130lbs his first year.

If you're gonna feed him whatver and let him grow too quickly...better start buying Ficox now. He's gonna need something for the hip pain later on. Doseage on a great Dane will be about a 50$ jar a week.

We do our own vaccinations, wound treatments, antibiotics, and treat any non serious injuries. The vet sees them twice a year for checkups.

Being a farm dog by day and a couch potato at night isn't an easy job.

It's like asking a dealership mechanic or your buddy who rebuilds engines what to do to your car when it makes a weird sound.

Then you wasted your money.

Large breed puppy food is just adult dog food marketed as a puppy food and priced a few extra dollars more.

If it is truly a "large breed puppy food" it nutritional makeup is the same as adult dog food. It will be easier on their digestive system to just start them on whatever adult dog food you are going to use and not have to change.

I haven't ever noticed a price difference between a large breed or regular dog food. Chill out guy.
