It’s dumb.

Some jobs you can do from home some jobs you can’t.

But any desk jobs with tractable metrics for performance can be done from home. and if they fall below those metric maybe then you bring them in or let them
go completely.

I took a job at a big corporation at the very end of covid and the conversation was: Oh well be coming back in, probably hybrid at first.

and within 6 months they announced we are subleasing the office.

they looked at their metrics, realized we were meeting them at home and that they could save money not leasing office space.

Now if you own a campus or building like the state thats another factor.

Those same workers who are unavailable because they're spending 10 minutes doing the laundry are still going to be "unavailable" in the office, they'll just be beside Susie's desk gossiping or at the coffee pot hearing about Tom's son's little league game.

Or if younger, they'll spend the entire day staring at their phones and moving their mouse every once in a while so that their screen stays on.

The only way you can’t do that is if it’s vague as to what the employee actually does for you and there are no performance targets. In that case, the job position shouldn’t exist at all in the first place whether it’s remote or in-person.

Those people can still be valuable as part of the team... vagueness isn't a good reason for positions not to exist

I like what this company does

Option 1) work from home but you’re on the clock your whole normal shift, so 8 total hours available at all time during those 8 hours

Option 2) go in the office to work but you only work 8am to 1pm

This is a big part of it. It’s like virtue signaling. I believe that state employees in Texas have started returning to the office and all state agencies are expected to be 100% in-office by the fall. I’ve heard that they are trying to avoid a mass exodus of employees by offering increased opportunities for OT, alternative work schedules, etc. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and if it ends up blowing up in Governor Abbott’s face.

definitely this. The one thing that covid taught us was that the office structure is not needed in like 80% of businesses.

I'll never understand why corporations would want to spend more money on overhead rather than let their employees wfh.

Hmmm....maybe what they learned is that the office structure is needed because productivity fell, collaboration suffered, and timelines were extended due to lack of responsiveness from WFH employees.

That's what happened in my line of work, can't speak for others.

Accountability is an issue at a lot of state agencies. It takes a lot for someone to come down on you.

also, if they did institute allowing you to work from home on the basis of proven performance, the ones who don't pass muster will cry foul how it isn't fair they can't work from home too, and it will work. LA civil service has no interest in running up stream or having a metric based on performance.

While I'm actually fine with that, it's another look at me- self serving move by Landry, which is what I've come to find all of his actions are.

Yes it is. I hope you’re not serious with this.

Every job should have objectives, goals, performance benchmarks, etc.
