Though if i felt i was really wronged by them in being let go, the next day i would show up at a rivals place and get a job so i could get revenge by stealing customers.

I've been managing people for a small business for almost 20 years now. A couple times we had to layoff a handful of people due to cost saving measures. Not once did we lay off anyone that was valuable. The people that get cut are always the ones with average / poor performance. Not saying this is your case, but something to consider. In the future, make yourself so valuable that your employer can't afford to cut you loose. Good luck in the future.

Par for the course on no Christmas bonus IMO. No severance package was shitty though. Industrial sales?

Sounds like you were slacking and lost key accounts. Do you really take no responsibility. Evaluate your performance. They did.

Below average worker and bitching about not getting a Christmas bonus after being canned. Lol.

Thank you all for your responses, even the arse reamings -- I knew I'd be flamed here somewhat for even posing the question. However, the Web is full of debate on whether to expect year-end bonuses after a layoff.

The picture is slightly more complicated, in that strategic/long-term managerial mistakes lost this account. If it wasn't for the stuff I was doing up until the end, this client would have cut bait a long time ago.

Also, I expected a little more from this company because the owner is/was somewhat of a friend (I was invited to his 50th birthday party just months before the layoff), and moreover is an Obama-loving liberal. I was expecting a little better treatment from someone who espouses touchy-feely values -- but apparently when push comes to shove, he's really just a capitalist.

Business law

Once you are no longer in a contract (marriage, employment, business, etc) you are owed nothing

If this is that important, I would stipulate a pro rated bonus clause in your next company

If this is the case, then you should call up that client and see what they have open. The other option is go to a rival company and stick it to them for letting you go due to their mistakes.

Very common as of late, many have cut performance based bonuses here.

FIL was laid off immediately after landing a $2.3M sale of IT equipment to a large organization. The only reason FIL could think of for being let go was that the owner did not want to pay him his commission...

The company justified stiffing him on commission because the payment had not cleared yet. He was incredulous

You expected money from a company 2 months after being laid off?

Why do so many people expect their employer to give them a Christmas bonus?

Your FIL should talk to a lawyer. Tbe OP has nothing to complain about, despite the topic being debated online.

No bonus would be normal in that situation... but to lay you off after 7 years with no severance? That's crappy. They may not have had a choice if they lost business.

I wasn't "expecting" a bonus after the layoff -- I was just holding out a candle for the potential of a pro-rated one.

Why? As I've alluded to, there was a personal element to my relationship with my boss -- we were friendly acquaintances and went to the same high school.

Moreover, I worked for years without a raise because the job offered a telecommuting option -- I'm a single father and having work flexibility is key, and I was undergoing a custody battle and was happy to have a flexible job.

I also have probably left weeks of vacation pay from prior years on the table because no one else at this company was trained to do my job, and yet we had to produce the same weekly product for this company -- which depended on my work -- so I rarely vacationed.

When I was hired, the first time I received the Christmas bonus I was shocked -- I had never been in an industry where I got this before. Why would I expect a bonus of some kind? Because bonuses are expected at this company at the end of the year, and I worked for most of the year there.
