A friend is considering giving his girlfriend a lab grown diamond engagement ring. He said she will not know it’s a real diamond and a lot cheaper. I advised him not to go that route. What are your thoughts? Am I wrong in my advice?

No go for an engagement ring. Ok for earrings. It is considered a real diamond.

He should ask her

You can have a 2.5 carat lab grown that is almost perfect or a mined 1.2 carat with imperfections for same price

Lab are exactly the same as mined. “Real” diamonds are a debeers scam

Its a real diamond and to place a premium on natural diamonds vs lab grown is galactically stupid.

That said, it's all about what you pay for it and how much you sacrifice for it regardless of what it looks like. This is one of those things where you accept that you're going to get fricked and write the check. Good practice for being married.

Regardless must be solid gold ring....but really depends on the girlfriend.
Mine would have killed me if I paid the amount for 1ct real vs CZ /l ab diamond. But she is very unmaterialistic.

Go cheap, he'll appreciate it during the divorce proceedings in 5-10 years. Trust me.

Yea, that’s what he’s thinking. Spent $7000 on first wife’s ring but he did get it back and is going to take it back to the jewelry store where he bought it and see how much they will give him for it.

Lab grown diamonds are chemically identical to mined diamonds. The premium on the latter is just a scam by jewelers and DeBeers to make you pay more.

One of the biggest scams ever. Convincing people they need to buy diamonds for different events.

As Americans we are fools and lazy for spending what we do on engagement rings.

God bless the sensibilities of my Bride, she wanted her birthstone a garnet. It’s pretty, understated and unique just like her.

In my opinion Diamond engagement rings are often thoughtless gestures purchased because Madison Avenue is good at its job.

Absolutely is a real diamond.
It's the diamond cubic allotrope of carbon.

Anybody saying it's not "real" is retarded.

No, your friend should absolutely get the lab grow diamond. They “are“ real diamonds and the main difference being a much lower price than “natural diamonds“ and the artificial diamonds are perfect. The diamond market is artificially manipulated to maintain high prices for diamonds that are otherwise not nearly as valuable as the prices are reflecting.

Tell your buddy to get the synthetic diamond, and save that extra money for something else like the wedding ring.

Personally, though, when I bought my wife’s engagement ring, I requested the bloodiest of blood diamonds. But that’s just me.

I but jewelry for my wife at the Jewelry District in Los Angeles. Some of the big jewelers there say that big time Hollyweird people have gone to lab grown because supposedly you can't tell.

But my wife refuses. They have some nice shite over there and will put together whatever you want. My wife's wedding ring came from there and it was a nice 2 carat from there. She's getting more diamond earrings this year.

Why? It's literally the exact same thing as a naturally occurring one, just significantly cheaper. Who would care?

She'd never be able to tell unless she ever went and got it inspected or appraised or whatever. There are some benefits of having a natural one as it will have a long term value compared to the lab grown one, but it is also much more expensive. The lab grown ones are a fraction of the cost, but they look great.

I don't think it is something that he should do without consulting her on for a couple reasons. She may have a preference, she may not care. If she prefers natural, but what she would want is unrealistic and unaffordable and she won't budge, big red flag right there.

If she is good with a lab one, go for it. Ultimately she will care more down the road that she has something that she gets comments on how pretty it is over her knowing deep down if it is a natural diamond or not.
