re: LA Office of Motor Vehicle Money Grab

We are taxed way too much in this state for the product we get.

A year after I moved out of state, I received a letter from Louisiana Dept of Rev that said I “owed” nearly 4K in back taxes for the previous year. It spent over a year making phone calls and sending multiple certified letters. During which time they managed to lose said letters (even when those on the phone would confirm receipt, but say it just hasn’t been opened yet so I’d have to keep calling back) and then added on more late fines. It reached critical mass when they then sent my debt to a collections agency.

The best part of my happy ending is not only did I not owe them the money. When I redid my taxes again to prove that I didn’t owe them fricking anything, I found an error and the state actually owed me $40+. I happily mailed them that copy and waited for my check.

Congrats, Louisiana. You actually lost money by not having your shite together. I hate every inept person at the LDR

I got caught in the money grab also. They asked for about $700 for insurance on a van I had sold 15 years before. I told them I had moved from LA 16 years ago and switched the insurance to FL when I moved. They asked for proof.

My wife had put away all the paperwork so I had proof. They asked me to fax it to them so I did. two weeks later I got the same bill, along with a threat to send to collections. I called, re-faxed, and was told on the phone that it was all straight.

Then collections started mailing me. I called them and told them I had proved twice that I did not owe it. The collections agency was pissed at the state. I faxed all the proof to them and have heard nothing since.

I started logging times, time waiting, times transferred, names of every worker, and what they told me.

I still couldn’t get an answer for how it was legal for the state to send a “debt” to a collections agency that I didn’t owe. Inept doesn’t begin to describe it

I will say the collections agency was much more responsive and understanding on every call. I imagine it happens a lot

reach out to Karen St. Germain. She is the commissioner. Don't try to deal with behind-the-counter level people.

I don't work for the gov't, but I work with them a bit. I can tell you the higher you go, with a legit complaint, the quicker and more favorable the outcome. Just as soon skip 3 months of climbing the ladder and go straight to the top.

After all the time spent dealing with their grabby hands, I need to know where I bill them for my time. They knew I was in the right and were obviously instructed to try every dirty trick in the book. Just get that cash is their mantra.

Y'all do realize Louisiana is a "one party" recording state. If one party know the call is being recorded it's legal to record phone calls.

Record every single call get names and any other information and take meticulous notes.

They told me I should have canceled it out of my name when I sold it to an exporter who sent it to Venezuela.

I wonder how much that would have cost me?

Keep in mind, once I sold it they waited 15 years to contact me.

Good luck. Having to deal with the OMV in any form or fashion is maddening. I would rather crawl naked thru broken glass.

I sold a car years ago. Get pulled over and the cop says my license is "flagged" and he took it. I owed $800(it was only $400 then) on two plates I didn't turn in. Then had to pay another $100 reinstatement.
