Has anyone successfully gone in and gotten this settled without giving in to the frickheads that run the LA mafia?

Long story short: I received a letter from my bank saying 4 levies have been placed on an account of mine (which I had my dad's name on while he was sick. He passed away a few years back. The LA Office of Debt recovery says he owes 4 different payments of $656.25 for the vehicles in his name which "lapsed" in insurance. Which must be after he sold these and moved out of state in 2012. He always kept his shite in order. I obviously don't have the records.

I can't find the details of what they are claiming because I don't know his LA driver's license number before he moved.

I have called multiple times and the people I spoke with kept forwarding me along and were legit jokes to speak with and obviously didn't give a frick.

Question: Any success stories or any advice other than just taking the L and one day hopefully telling the person who passed this money grab to go frick themselves?

I remember threads on here about when this came about years back and that's all I know of it.

Fight it, Louisiana just sends these letters out to get you to write a check. But when you press them for proof, they won’t have their own ducks in a row and it falls apart

They sent a “debt” I owed to freaking collections, even after I had sent certified letters proving I didn’t owe it. It was maddening.

Keep a log of every time you call and get names of those you talk to, too. Because I kept getting the run around and told different things but I didn’t write down. After I had names and times of what I was told before it made it easier for them to run my call up the chain

Good luck, try not to bomb the place...

So its not just a letter anymore. They sent letters to an address where my dad lived back in 2012. Then handed it over to the office of debt recovery. They have a levy on my back account. The bank said there is nothing they could do.

I fought it for years.

I even had proof that I had paid the stupid fine already.

I fought it and fought it and fought it.

In the end they broke me with red tape. I spent an entire day and almost a grand. I am on a payment plan to the scum now.

They held my registration hostage and wouldn’t let me get a new license unless I paid the fine.

frick them. frick them all.

OP won’t have to deal with this at least, if I’m reading it right

Why don't you have his records? Who does? Can you get them?
When my mother passed away, my sister and I had all her records.

edit for spelling.

They got me a few years ago.
Sold my truck to a family member, apparently my insurance stopped coverage before the truck was actually switched over.

Fast forward, I go renew my license and there’s a flag. $50 for lapsed coverage of like 4 days 2 years prior.

And you know who gets really hammered by them, poor people.

I don't have his license number from LA. He moved out of state. Got a new license.

Regarding insurance records from old vehicles that he sold? I don't even know who his insurance was with. And why I would have that? Or even know why he would keep that?

Yep. It’s really sad...they just rack up fines on fines on fines because everything can spiral. Especially if you have an older vehicle that can’t pass inspection sticker test.

Good lesson here, always keep records of everything you sell, receipts esp. Maybe we got lucky, my mother kept every thing, filed away. made it easy going through her things after she passed.

I had a problem with them telling me my insurance lapsed when I changed insurance companies. I wasnt able to renew my license because of it. Took 3 trips and 4 people to straighten it out. Ended up paying zero

Insurance that had lapsed on a wrecked car. It was so stupid. I paid the fine to get reinstated and found a receipt. But when they did that mass mailing, they said I had to pay it again.

I refused and fought it and the fine kept going up.

Finally they had sent me to collections and were harassing me and I needed the registration and license...so I spent a day down at the dmv, and went to 4 different offices...in the end I was so tired of the bullshite I just paid the fines so I could get legal again.

I hate hate hate bureaucracy.

I don’t see how they can make a claim to a account that is yours just because your Dad’s name is on it. I have a account set up similarly. My Dad is 80 and I keep a account in my name but have his name on it so he can draw from it in case he ever needs some extra cash.

The best thing is knowing the people who are driving around with no insurance are not experiencing any repercussions.

Wow, this is ridiculous. i cant even imagine how infuriating it must be to have to keep dealing with it. I would give them your dad's new "forwarding address" at the cemetary but they still have you with the bank lein.

The problem may be that you are dealing with the bigger offices and anonymous various people on the phone. frick them,

Not sure where you are but if you can get to the DMV satelite office in New Roads, you may be in for a pleasant surprise. First off, you walk in and get immediate service from a nice human. I have never known there to be a wait there.

The staff there has always been nice and can possibly give you some viable options or at least get some answers or progress. ( I always make the trip to them even though it is farther from my home).

You can maybe call them just to talk to an employee and see if it is worth the trip. Remember to be nice to them, they are usually really nice ladies there and have sense of humor.

But there may be nothing they can do if this is all in the La State Money grab. You might have to go to the state office, wait in line, and sign an agreement/payment plan to have the crap lifted off your acct.

Seriously you have my prayer for having to deal with this crap

Had this happen to me. I totaled my first truck when I got run off of I10 into the woods coming off the basin bridge. Thankfully didn’t hit anyone or injure myself. Insurance cut me a check, went and bought a new car a few days later. Pulled the plates off my truck and turned them in, cancelled insurance once total went through.

Fast forward a few years, went to get my license renewed, had a levy and block for lapsed insurance in the truck I no longer owned. Fought with the dmv for a while, they sent me to a reinstatement Office. Fought with them too, had the letter of total from insurance and the record from dmv when I turned in plates. Still wouldn’t release the block and wanted me to pay a $600 fine.

I ended up having to go to the state office and pull the motor vehicle records showing the change in ownership and scrapping of the vehicle along with the rest of my info. Send back again and got it removed.

These people are dumb.

To Ponchy. If both names have access it's both of yours account. I would set him up one and just put money in it when he wants/needs it. It will be a lot less stress to tell the collectors he passed and good luck.
