Louisiana has a new commissioner of higher education. Kim Hunter Reed came to Lafayette on her annual listening tour across the state. Here's what she had to say.
Reed focused on increasing access and diversifying during her talk on Aug. 20 at the Cecil J. Picard Center Child Development and Lifelong Learning at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
"Our institutions are anchors of our community, and we have to make sure that the doors are open to more and more of our citizens in Louisiana, whether they're young or young at heart, so that they have the opportunity to reach their unlimited potential," Reed said. "That's what higher education can do."
She said higher education already looks different, student by student. People come to an institution differently. There are the "traditional" students who go straight to college from high school and the "non-traditional" or older students.
..
"(Education) is no longer a luxury," Reed said. "It is a necessity. And it is our job that every student — no matter race or place or geography or family background or parents' education level — every student has the opportunity to pursue a life-changing degree. Because we believe in education. Because it's transformational for our students, for their families, and it's community-building at its best."
I’ve never really considered my education to be a luxury. Looking back though all those books I had to read, reports to write, problems to work, etc was pretty self indulgent of me.

The thing about college is you have to graduate high school to get there
That's not a guarantee for people that are in the underclass of society

And this is why we have too many dumbasses attending college. And we have too many colleges that we don't need.

What a tone deaf, idiotic statement? Now more than ever, we need more kids going into the trades.
FTR I am a teacher with a Masters degree in Ed. I guide most of my students towards tech schools. They’ll make more than me within a year out of high school.

In a general sense, education has always been a necessity.

Reed has extensive higher education and government experience. She served in President Barack Obama’s administration as deputy undersecretary at the U.S. Department of Education, leading postsecondary diversity and inclusion work, supporting strong student and outcomes-focused policies and aggressive national outreach efforts. She also led the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Before serving in the administration, Reed was a principal at HCM Strategists LLC, a public policy and advocacy consulting firm in Washington, D.C.
Her former and current job don't sound like necessities.

This country could probably easily cut 5,000 jobs like hers and be in a better place.

She spoke at the summer commencement for Lsu a few weeks ago. The speech was ok but didn’t really give any advice on how to actually join the real world or working force. Her main point was equality and how she wished her grandparents could see her today since they weren’t afforded an opportunity to attend Lsu since they were black.
Not entirely sure if her statement was true but it was surely self serving and odd to make at a commencement speech. Looks like more of the same in Louisiana!

Raise the goddamned TOPS requirements.

This is the kind of thinking that has set us back.
The only people that should get a degree are the few that are capable.

Close 12 of the 16 public universities!*
*Also note that that number doesn’t include the large number of public community colleges. Many should be closed as well.

In the US cognitive deficiency is a much greater obstacle to get an education than economic deficiency.

I'm not sure who is worse for our state: her or John "Common Core" White.
