The finality of it isn’t scary as the concept of how sudden death can be. Enjoy life. That’s all we can do brother.

I never thought of a world without Kobe Bryant. It just never even considered crossing my mind. He just seemed like one of those guys who would be around a basketball court talking shite giving pointers to young players for the next 50 years. Instead he won’t even give his Hall of Fame induction speech.

...

He was set to headline one of the great Hall of Fame classes of all time, and now his wife or his daughters or all the above will speak on his behalf. There won’t be a dry eye in the room. His speech would have been incredible: shots at Shaq, Phil, random players the rest of us had forgotten. Now, it will be a celebration of a life cut short.

Damn

I struggle with it too, and it’s ok to admit that it sucks really badly.

But I also believe these words are true from the Heidelberg Confession:

Q&A 1
Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?
A. That I am not my own,1 but belong—body and soul, in life and in death2—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.3

He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood,4 and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.5 He also watches over me in such a way6 that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven;7 in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.8

Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life9 and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.10

Yeah I tend to worry a lot about it. But I'm definitely a worrier in general, and it would make sense that that's the ultimate thing to worry about. The notification being the most distressing part, in my mind.

as a grown man, one of the most stark differences in turning into a man is I completely lost my fear of death. I have zero fear of death. Maybe it's the lifestyle I led up until finally becoming a man, I don't know.

Another weird thing that happened is I completely lost all fear of heights. I could hang off one of those skyscrapers like the crazy Russians and it not bother me a single bit. But as a young man I can remember certain times walking to the side of a highrise and not stepping close to the edge.

Going into my first battle in Vietnam at age 19, I thought I was immortal. When the shooting began, the tracers whizzing by, the grenades exploding, I knew I was mortal and would die. When it was over and I stood and looked at the dead around me, I felt immortal again.

Going into my second battle, I again felt immortal — until it all came down around me again. I trembled, I feared, I was resigned to falling. But when the battle ended and again I stood and looked around, I suspected I just might be immortal.

And so it went, time and again, battle after battle, confirming my immortality by exposing me to my mortality.

Then I came home, lived life and watched several of my young friends die in auto accidents and private plane crashes. Again I proved immortal.

Then at 53 I had a rather serious heart attack and thought the reaper had finally remembered to collect my soul. But I again cheated him and was convinced I was immortal.

Now, approaching 70, I finally realize the truth — I am indeed immortal. Until I’m not. And I’ll not be around to contemplate how I was wrong.

Death is natural. Do you remember before you were born? That's what its gonna be like after you're dead. Not existing is a tough concept to wrap your head around.

I think about it everyday when I am leaving for work. I always try to tell everyone I love them even if we are mad at each other.

As you get ready to go to sleep start thinking about whether you’ll wake up or pass in your sleep.

It’ll keep you awake contemplating life and death until you can’t keep your eyes open.

Use to do this often and would keep myself up at night all the time. Especially when I first moved away and lived alone. But I finally rationalized that life went on for thousands, if not millions of years before me and will after me. None of us asked to be here. At some point we won’t be here and you just have to enjoy life and make the most of it until then

I don't fear my death, especially sudden death.

I fear experiencing an agonizing long road before death, either by accidental trauma, unexpected disease or some malicious agency, all of which I'd be praying for death to end the suffering.

Now what I most fear is the loss of people I love or cherish while I am living.

Death is much harder on those of us left behind.

From 2004, Zevon comes off his deathbed to make a final appearance on the Letterman Show.

Dave asks him to summarize his journey to death’s door and what might be his (Zevon’s) advice to the rest of us.

“Enjoy every sandwich.”

When it comes to a death, it's better for you to not speak. Just a friendly reminder since you don't have a good filter to help you.
