Good news for me is that I think wanting another adults signature is pretty fricking dumb

I have an unsolicited autographed photo from my favorite actor that I received as a kid after writing a letter to him.
I have two of these - Dan Marino and Sid Bream. Wrote fan letters as a kid as part of a school bit and they sent back 5x7 pictures autographed to me. Still have 'em.

My wife and I make very good living. I enjoy collectibles, especially now that I have a son.

About 3 years ago, I had an epiphany.

None of this crap is an investment or worth sinking real money in to. 98% of the crap does not appreciate value. The only stuff worth putting real money in to is old old baseball cards.

I just quit and started buying stocks. Unless there is just something I think is really cool to own.

Does it really matter as long as you believe it’s real and if professionals were fooled by it and certified it then it retains the value to any buyers because they won’t be fooled either.

I am not worried about forged autographs, I have most of my stuff either witnessed or authenticated by PSA and such. My autographs are mostly very old, just like my card collection. Today has become an insane racket, folks paying thousands for a modern rookie card is a crazy investment...

Worth 350M and kills himself. Idiot. With that kind of money you can hide pretty well.

As someone with many autographed baseballs, I'm not (as an adult) standing in line to get another adult to sign a ball for me. Plus, some are impossible to get as the players themselves are deceased, retired, etc.

Some of the pre-war cards I bought for a few hundred dollars 20 years ago are worth several thousand today.

How do they fake the signature? Are they using an autopen to sign stuff similar to what Joe Bidens handlers did?

I have a soft spot for some 90s basketball card sets but I’ve never understood the hype over autos. If it’s a great card I’d rather it not have someone’s writing on it. Autographs are cool personal items that have no real value unless you have a connection to the original signing.

Yes. The guy was also printing his own fake Panini cards, and printing the holograms.

I’ve always thought it’s weird for an adult to ask another adult for their signature.

If it’s good enough for Indiana Jones…

If any of you happen to have any baseballs "signed" by Skip Bertman from the mid 90's, I can introduce you to my friend whose job as a student worker was to sign a 5 gallon bucket of balls each day at work.....

If you don't see them sign with your own eyes, they didn't sign it.

I mean, if you’re going into the hobby to make money, you’re probably right. I’d love to add a Skenes auto to my collection, but I’m not dropping $150 on a sticker auto right now. I also never understand the hype of people throwing down thousands of dollars on a “prospect”. Even if they guy pans out, the cards always lose value long term because they sign more and more through Panini or Fanatics.

Most of my signed stuff is in person and without fees for signings and whatnot. That’s the sole reason why it will be a profitable inheritance for someone when I pass. That said, it’ll be a pain in the arse to sell

But yeah…you won’t find me paying out the arse for some newly drafted pitcher in hopes that he blows up and allows me to sell a gem 10 at a nice profit. You lose way more than you win in that industry.
