I get my 3 year old to say yes/no, sir/ma'am to my wife and I not because I care about him saying it to me but because he's around us more than anyone else and I want him to get in the habit of responding that way to an adult.

Exactly.

I do expect them to say it to me though if they are getting in trouble and I need to make sure they understand what I'm saying and am serious about it. Other times it's just to keep the consistency so it's second nature.

It wasn't a major point of emphasis in our house growing up but we were taught to say sir and ma'am as young kids but most importantly we were taught to be respectful of everyone and the sir and ma'am deal just kinda worked it's way out. It's funny though because my brother is such a POS sometimes but people love him because he's so respectful.

I don't think I've ever given as many up/down votes in one thread before My 7yo daughter addresses every adult as sir or ma'am.

Then again she asked a snowflake why she wanted to dress like a man.... Love my girl!! She can get away with asking the obvious questions I frequently would love to ask.

Just because a kid says "yes sir" and "yes ma'am" doesn't mean they don't also call you mom and dad.

"Hey Dad, can i go outside and play?" "Finish your homework first and then you can go outside and play". "Yes sir".

Your friend needs to mind his own business.

and

saying yes Daddy or yes Dad

are OK too

My children are grown and still answer me with yes/no sir. It's a sign of respect and proper raising in my family. We have great relationships.

Why do you need these words to feel respected? From my perspective, the need to reinforce a right or wrong way to address you is more of an ego problem than a parental issue.

My dad taught me at a young age he only asks one time and the reply better end with a sir.

I turned out alright.

Mine too, I would add that he also expected the same response when I answered any adult.

For me it's more about that if they are respectful of me, I know they will be respectful of other adults. Drives me up the wall when my nephews answer my mom or dad with yeah or no with a sassy, fat body, pussy tone.

I said sir or ma'am to all adults and still do. And I've taught my kids have to do the same to all adults. It's called teaching discipline and showing respect to your elders. And if more parents would put forth the effort today to do it, our country wouldn't be turning into the steaming pile of dog shite that it is.

My parents would not let me call them "ma'am" or "sir", but strictly enforced me calling other adults that.

If I did it to my parents they'd think I was being a smartass.

I require my girls to say yes ma'am, please and thank you. The youngest is 18 months and I am teaching her now.

I agree with this. In certain situations you may think it's being respectful but it actually sounds sarcastic or smartallic
