Hell yes I said yes sir and no sir. My parents weren't trashy and raised me to have some respect.

Several years ago, while I still worked, a Black lady had to finish her project by going thru my group. Her supervisor had not told her of the extra step involved and she was very upset because it was the end of the day.

She came to me ranting and raving. I heard her out and as she left she demanded to be notified when my staff had completed her request. I said "Yes, Ma'am".

She whipped around and said "Don't ever call me that again. Ma'am is short for madam and I am no madam.".

I stood up to my full height, over 6 feet, faced her and said "I still address my mother with Yes Ma'am and No Ma'am. And if it is good enough for her then it is good enough for you.".

She opened her mouth to say something else smart alecky and then realized she would be talking about my mama. She walked off and never addressed that subject again.

I've never once called my father Sir or my Mother Ma'am always just Mom and Dad. Sir and Ma'am are reserved for people who aren't familiar.

As long as he doesn't steal or kill, my son doesn't have to has sir or ma'am.

But let me turn on the tv and see he's done one or both, and he will have to.

I wonder if anyone who grew up saying sir or ma'am has ever stole or killed?

My kids are pretty funny. It's dad or daddy until I start to get shitty. Then suddenly it's "yes sir, no sir."

I think this is even worse than the dictator daddys in this thread. Calling someone younger than you "sir" comes across as sarcastic.

The way I was raised, kids are taught to say sir/ma'am to all adults.

some areas I'm told, consider it to be rude somehow. Like you're calling a woman old by saying it or something.

I do it. It's more of a respect thing than sarcasm.

If my son is being a brat I won't say it but if he asks a question and is being polite I'll say "yes sir".

Let me just say this.

If I ask a group of kids "would you like some Ice cream?" 3 kids say yes sir and your kid says yea, I'm going to buy 3 scoops of ice cream and let your kid try and figure out why he doesn't have any ice cream. It's because you raised a non respectable p.o.s. Who will be a burden to society and not a productive member. Go figure

If I ever told my parts "yes" or "no" they would always say "yes what?" to remind me I forgot to say "sir" or "no". Every time we went someone they always told me, before getting out of the car... "you better not forget to say sir or ma'am and call everyone mr or ms".. One time I called some kid who was a teenage "sir" and I remember that dude asking his mom, right in front of me "why is he calling me sir".. I was probably 7 or 8...

My children can call me dad, daddy, pops, whatever. There are times my son will use sir and it's usually when he is being corrected or a teaching moment.

Dated a girl that was into calling me that during sex. That phrase is nails on a chalkboard to me.

I insist that my children say yes sir, no sir and yes ma'am or no ma'am to all adults including myself and my wife. There are no exceptions to this rule. They call us mom and dad but must answer with proper manners. My 16 year old son had a friend over and I corrected his friend when he answered my question with "yeah" instead of "yes sir". I did not mean to embarrass him, but in my house, you will obey by the rules.
