By this thread’s standards most kids who grow up in the hamptons are trash.

I'm a proud southerner and I will belch out fire and fury about the war of northern aggression and how Lincoln was a piece of shite.

But this sir and mam crap is definitely one southern thing that I'm glad I was not raised on.

There are so many people in this thread that refuse to understand that it does not mean anything if you don't use sir and mam towards other adults or for your kids. The rest of the country outside the south does not use it and they're not worth more or less than we are because of that.

Wow, you are really showing your immaturity here.

Some folks believe in proper manners and some don't the choice is yours.

In fact, I find that parents who insist on their kids calling them sir and man even when they're grown arse adults to be weird and creepy.

And I find that no one needs insist that children raised to show this symbol of respect for their elders needs to be told to do as an adult.

We get it, you think it is cool to be irreverent and likely would weart shorts and a tanktop to a church wedding, the rest of us are just glad you self ID so there is no need to wonder.

Who judges what's proper manners here?

I've seen southerners call people mam and sir out west and up north and they looked at them like it was disrespectful as frick.

Why do you think the south has a monopoly on dictating what constitutes manners?

Now this is a passive aggressive melt.

I teach my kids proper manners. That does not include teaching them to say sir or ma'am because that isn't considered "proper manners" where we live. If anything, it causes others to think you're being sarcastic or just plain weird.

There is no universal definition of proper manners.

Every adult child and small child uses those terms. It’s unacceptable in our family not to be polite.

you really need to get out more

It is just after 9 AM here in Saudi Arabia and I have been addressed as sir a dozen times already.

My wife is a Brit and every single member of her family practices this.

There is good reason Southerners are condidered the favorite Americans of most outside the USA, it is because we in general are polite and respectful of others and it is a shame so many parents of gen X'ers failed so badly.

I have my 3 and 2 year olds call me Sir. For example I tell them to clean their room and they say, "Yes Sir." A friend of mine thinks it's weird and disturbing they say yes Sir to me. She believes they should be saying yes Daddy or yes Dad or something else along those lines. What does the OT think? IMO kids who don't say Sir or ma'am are from trashy families.

You are a fan of Rubio, who's a whore for the prison lobby, and you want to call others trashy? LOL

This thread is awesome. Same people teaching their kids "respect" by saying "sir" and "ma'am" more than likely use racist names to address people of different ethnicities. Not to mention you guys are still stuck on the civil war with some of the comments I read. WEIRD

Or you are just a control freak who will let idealized views of discipline get in the way of actually having a relationship with your children.

Just exactly how fricking stupid are you?
