If they were talking to another adult I would think that "Yes, sir/ma'am" or "yes, Mr. or Mrs. so and so" would be equally appropriate so with you "yes, sir" or Yes, dad" should work. All show signs of respect. Agree that a simple yes or, even worse, yeah, does not work.

Those words are now dated and have run their course. Now it is just weird. Teach your kids to respect authority through actions, not words.

Our three adult children, all in their 30s, still use Sir and Ma'am with their parents and other elders

i say sir/ma'am but not to my parents (esp not my dad. i have called him by his first name since i was in 5th grade)

My family didn't/doesn't do it. I think it has to do with the French influence and the formal vs family thing. I said sir and ma'am to all adults not my parents.

That's the way it was at my parents' house and the way it was at my house.

I jokingly make my 3yo say sir to me sometimes, and he has morphed it, without my influence, into "yes sir, daddy sir." He's such a smart arse.

same
it never really even occurred to me to do it, esp after like early childhood. my mom knew not to challenge me and to just foster my imagination and spirit so creating that division was just a way to create potential tension/conflict. my dad was an abusive drunk who didn't support his family and deserve respect (so i didn't give it to him)
my parents were also hippies so that kind of shite wasn't really forced no us anyway
*ETA: my dad is also a yankees so it wasn't French influence. his family doesn't say sir/ma'am and it's a sign of disrespect up North quite often (they interpret it as sarcasm and not formal respect)

It's an echo to an era gone by. But my kids would do that as well.

I have my 3 and 2 year olds call me Sir. For example I tell them to clean their room and they say, "Yes Sir."
I don't have any problem with kids having manners and respecting their elders or other people. Using Sir or Ma'am is a perfect way to instill that.

A friend of mine thinks it's weird and disturbing they say yes Sir to me.
Your friend is obviously not a fan of respect or manners.

She believes they should be saying yes Daddy or yes Dad or something else along those lines.
If my kid says this or yes sir, i am happy. But with adults outside of my house, it better be sir or ma'am.

Went to buy gas at a local convenience. Young black woman cashier's son (7 years old) was there. He was looking at my old Chrysler Convertible, commenting that he had never seen a car that big and asking how the convertible top worked. I gave him a ride around the block. If I asked him a question, he said "yes sir" or "no sir" and he thanked me for the ride.
I told his mother that I was impressed with her son's manners and she said "He knows I don't play."
In this town, you are more likely to get a "yes sir" or "no sir" from a black child than a white one.
They have a club at the middle school where a teacher instructs young men on how to be a gentleman.
Hell, I've had gangsta looking kids here call me "sir."

We'd have a much better country if everyone exercised common courtesy.
Sexual harassment would go away, because polite men don't make unwelcome moves towards women.
Arguments where someone tries to win by being loud would go away.
Racial tensions would ease.

This. I know my 6yr old can be loud, crazy and inappropriate just like any kid. But When someone compliments us on how well mannered he is, We take pride in that.
