My wife has a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited. It's a great vehicle. Sits 4 adults comfortably, nice leather interior, great sound system, quiet, rides great, has some get up and go, gets about 24 miles to the gallon..... no issues at all with it.

KIA is a vastly superior machine.

Yeah cause a buick was always better than a chevrolet...
Kias and Hyundais have a reputation for having BAD ring and bearing problems in the last 3-4 years. It is really bad according to some consumer groups. I know 3 different people with Elantras with less than 50K miles on them that use 3-4 quarts of oil between changes. I know 2 people with Tellurides with less than 30K miles withd the same issues. My son has a 2016 Accent with about 70K miles on it and he has had no issues. We had a 2004 Sportage and it had nearly 300K on it when our son burnt a rear wheel bearing out of it and it got so hot it caused frame damage and could not be fixed without tires wearing poorly on the rear. I would think long and hard considering the ring and bearing problems that are being reported.

Don't own one outside of warranty, they have had issues, both Kia and Hyundai with not having replacement parts, mainly engines and engine parts available for vehicles outside of warranty. The cars are pretty decent... but if you can't fix the motor...
This has been an issue with them since they were introduced in the US Market. We had some issues with our Sportage, our son has not had it with his Accent but they have sold a shite ton of Accents.
They are also EXTREMELY expensive to work on. I had to pull the engine partially out of the Sportage to change the alternator. Service Manual called for complete engine removal. My sister had the Kia Mini Van and the timing belt started slipping and throwing a code. It was still under warranty the first time. KIA installed a new engine instead of pulling and replacing the belt and tensioners. It happened again when the van surpassed 100K and KIA wanted a little over $12K to fix a timing belt that had not parted yet...engine was find, just throwing a code. They finally found a mechanic who did it for $3K. I was going to give it a go but the service manual made it look like it would take about 120 hours to do. They are notoriously difficult to work one because they are basically disposable...in Korea. In the states where they cost $50K they are not disposable but you could find yourself with a helluva expensive piece of lawn art...

Kia is a cheaply made car. Engine and transmission are fine but everything else falls apart or breaks.
This was true for a minute with the brand but there are BUNCHES of reports of 3-4 year old Kias with 4s and v6s that use 3-4 quarts of oil between changes in vehicles with 50K on them. Not everyone of them of course but enough for it to be noticed in the automotive press. Not good.

My last 2 girlfriends drove new kias. One was a fully loaded telluride and the other a 23 sportage. Both were years ahead of the big 3 in technology, roomy/comfortable, and they basically drive themselves. I would recommend a telluride in a heartbeat.

How hard is it to source a piston ring that does the job?
Not like it's a new technology

In the last five years they definitely stepped up their game from their first 15 or so

It's the same brand. Got a guy that works for a supplier. He says Hyundai and Kia spec pretty shitty parts.
They're better than they used to be. And I give them props for giving some effort on styling.

Compared to Toyota, no
Generally agree. But modern cars, including Toyota, are more disposable than ever. So I'm not sure it matters. With CVTs, hybrids, turbo-charged tiny motors, etc, what difference does it make?
Not blaming Toyota. Blaming the federal government. They don't want you to own a car for 10 years or more.

All manufactures outsource most of the parts in their vehicles. They put out bids, test the submissions, negotiate a price, and go on from there. Recalls usually happen due to some sort of design flaw.
A bad batch of rings, lifters, gaskets, and so on only get left up to the name of the badges on the vehicle.
People would be amazed at how many Toyota parts are made from the same company that makes parts for other brands of vehicles.
For instance: brembo makes the performance brake calipers for almost every manufacturer. Used to be TRW. Very few parts on vehicles are brand specific anymore.

Some are saying they have more bells and whistles for the price

I made that statement and I stand by it.
Hondas are still a good product, but KIA is a much better product for the money. (Now)
I can remember when Hondas were pretty terrible, but they got better.
Things can change in the car business, and KIA has substantially upped their game.

Considering it comes with an 8 year, 100k mile warranty……

I have a '22 Kia Sorento that I like a lot. Great feature, insane value, spacious, looks somewhat luxurious, etc.
That said, it's had some weird issues (indicative of cheap parts) that I haven't experienced with any other car manufacturer and the dealership/service experience is by far the worst of any brand I've owned.

What are your thoughts on any of the makes/models I mentioned above, good or bad?
I would consider adding the Mazda CX90 to your list. Its a very nice vehicle
