I'm not sure how many people actively root against him these days, but there still seems to be a fair amount who refuse to accept his public image as authentic, for whatever reason.

Prior to the scandal, no. Obviously, they worshipped him in Happy Valley but he was generally universally liked save the normal rival school dislike.
During bowl season the announcers would always fawn over him. He had that grandfather vibe.

The only reason I didn't like Tim Tebow was because he was playing for Florida. Once he was gone from college I have nothing against him

Maybe not as much as Tebow, but LeBron.
Couldn't really ask for more as the face of a pro league. Married his high school sweetheart. No off-court controversies, donates a shitload of money, founded a school for at-risk youth.
People will cite the race shite as a reason to hate him, or that he is a bad teammate for trying to trade away his entire team this past season, but none of those explain why so many wanted him to fail the 14 years before all that.
