I lived in the Quarter early nineties and I never had a problem. Not saying it was safe but I had zero issues. I took precautions and carried concealed. Saw a lot of fights and a hit and run on canal. I had a friend in Treme that got his apartment broken into a few times.

I moved from the Westbank to buy a shotgun double near City Park in 1997. A friend I had grown up with said "You're gonna get shot!". I did hear gunshots a few times, but I'm still alive and well.
I avoided bad neighborhoods and never felt unsafe in New Orleans.

I lived in Metairie in the mid-90's
I'd go down to the bars at the Quarter with my neighbor and he was a DEA agent, and he was scared to death to go down there without packing

Yes you did
Yep and even worse was residential areas. One of my good friends from high school had his wife killed on Carondelet Street during a car jacking attempt. She locked the door and the animals shot her through the window. He ended up quitting his job and went to law school and worked for the JP DA office prosecuting violent crime.

I remember in Baton Rouge that we hit the "lock your car door" area on hwy 19 near Scotlandville. Car jackings were rampant in the early 90s.

Grew up in New Orleans from 1985-1996. Didn’t think too much of it then, when I was a kid. But I obviously realize I didn’t know shite.
Just took my family for one night on Sunday on our way to the beach. Probably first time I’ve been in 4 years.
I felt unsafe. The amount of nefarious shite going on is insane.

The thing folks forget is how Katrina mixed everything up. Before Katrina we used to know where the good neighborhoods were and where the bad neighborhoods were. After Katrina everything was random for several years.
We never had a problem in New Orleans in the 90s. Things were looking up for business and there were a lot of opportunities. Katrina is the dividing line.

In 1992 I was mugged at gunpoint on NYE outside a federal judge's house Uptown, guarded by 4 off duty NOPD. Cops shot at the fleeing robbers as they fled down the street. Caught them after a chase. I was the last of over 20 people they mugged that night. Still went out Uptown after that without fear, but I did move to Metairie for a while. 90s were bad.
