1998 I applied for then interviewed and did a polygraph and was accepted to the academy at the New Orleans Police Department.
My exwife had an uncle who owned property on Bourbon and we could have lived there for free but she was uneasy with the city even though all of her family lived either in the city or on the West Bank.
Thank my God everyday.

I went to high school in the city 94-98
Murder rate was high but it was contained to certain areas, the projects and lower 9 mainly
I used to drive through holly grove at 10 pm going back to metry and never felt unsafe.

The east was never the Ritz, but it was not that bad.
Gentilly wasn’t too bad either. My aunt lived towards the lake off of St Bernard Ave in a nice neighborhood. The St Bernard was within walking distance.
But it was isolated from the rest of the projects. All the others were essentially next to each other along the same road.

It's worse today. They just used to not fudge stats. Almost every major city today manipulates their crime statistics. Yes, even murders but I won't go into it.

I visited NOLA a lot in the mid to late 90's while in college going to concerts, etc. Maybe it was because I was younger but I was never really that scared. I always said NOLA is great to visit for a day or two, but would never live there.

Statistically worse but much safer if you stayed in the good areas and weren't involved in the life.

If you knew this, you were alright.
I had my house broken into uptown in 94, but wasn’t home at the time. I knew who did it because the crackhead had been casing the neighborhood for weeks. On top of that he cut himself and left blood and fingerprints everywhere. NOPD had -zero- interest in doing anything but getting the police report filed.
When the cops don’t pursue criminals, you get more crime.

Murder Capital of the World. There was a very thin line between law enforcement and the criminals. But back then you knew where not to go. For the most part it was all going on in the projects and areas around the projects. That's what's different about crime today, section 8 spread it out.

Had a group of college buddies that went to Jesuit, BM, Rummel. They knew where to go and where not to go. Lot of fun was had.
If my buddies from back home were going out in the city I knew somehow we were going to end up in Calliope. My arse was staying north of the lake.
