Interesting thread. So should this country not treat the ER like it’s the doctor’s office? Looks like that would put a lot of people out of work.

This virus is sending some real mixed messages about our hospital system.

Bet those hospital administrators ain’t missing a paycheck though.
You'd be wrong.

I know of several admins who have reduced their own pay and non-clinical but essential staff's pay 20%-30%.

The head of HCA (the largest private Hospital Chain in the US) is donating his entire salary to their charitable arm for the time being. Fierce Healthcare Link

A lot of BS emergency room visits have dried up too.

I kinda expected the opposite, but this is a good thing.

Right, but shouldn't there be required medical procedures still going on all the time?

Surgeries, scans, etc? Im not talking about the walk in clinics.

Many, many surgeries that are done on a daily basis can wait 30 days per the initial guidelines. If you are sick enough to be in the hospital for non-covid related issue/issues, most likely your surgical case will be performed.

un possible in every 4 hour daily press conference cuomo is still screaming hospitals are over run and they need 50 more hospitals and billions of dollars for all the extra sick people

This is what I don’t understand. We’ve shut down the economy and instituted social distancing because of the fear of overwhelming the hospitals with corona patients, but at the same time we’ve shut down parts of the hospital/healthcare industry as well. We’ve essentially paralyzed ourselves to the point that we only are focusing on one type of patient at the expense of literally everyone else. I don’t understand the rationale for it.

Our ER visits are down but admits are up. Elective surgeries are cancelled so Ortho, ENT, Urology are coming into the ER for almost anything you call them for. As far as Administration in General not the sharpest crayons in the box. And Fut, the head of HCA can go to hell

Not specifically replying to you Lith, but the cardiac cath labs and admits are way down. No stress tests, therefore no subsequent angiograms, stents, or bypasses.
Only the emergent hearts are getting treated, as well as emergent lower extremity vascular cases.

Podnuh of mine is executive at BCBS, I spoke to him 2 nights ago to hear the insurance company perspective.

No pun intended, he said they are killing it.

Premiums are still coming in the door, all the elective bullshite visits and surgeries just ain't happening, and the Feds are going to reimburse them for most of this coronavirus expense.

I opined this just to a customer the other day. Thanks for the confirmation of what I suspected. Meanwhile, we are getting denial of replacement letters from BCBS, until they receive a letter from the manufacturer that the equipment is un-repairable. A person's stuff isn't working, someone has to ship it, wait for a tech there to get to it, then send out and letter, get said letter back to the insurance company, then they will authorize payment.

Just like any other business they are projecting big revenue declines

Yep, the electives are the money makers for some hospitals, they have to offset that loss of revenue somehow unfortunately.

You can't have people sitting around doing nothing at work when the business is tanking.
