Nothing will topple their government faster than when the Cuban woman realize what western culture they have been denied all these years. I hope to swing in during the chaos and pick up a '57 Chevy dirt cheap.

Am I supposed to feel guilty for wanting to visit Cuba because some Cubans tortured Americans in the 60's?
This. Sort of.
Find a country where atrocities/injustices have not taken place? I would love to visit Cuba. After several months and thousands and thousands of Americans have traveled there without incident. By then though it may have lost some of its charm. That "time capsule" will be gone.

Yes. It's so tragic to ponder the Cuban people escaping their State-imposed-Ludditism. How horrible not being in subjugation will be for them. And how sad for those of us who enjoy "poverty-chic tourism". I wish they would just stay charming and compliant to the whims of their Communist leaders so that my vacations could stay quaint and charming.

I MEANT how sad it will be when Cubans are raped of their culture. When they are traded straight up a Ford Taurus for a 57' Chevy or (name any classic car) because "oooh-aaahhh. The doors go down with a button".
You keep, saying poverty chic tourism. If you've ever been to Mexico you can frick yourself right in your sanctimonious arse. Every scrap of beautiful beachfront land has a damned castle like hotel on it and 1/4 mile inland is poverty. And corrupt government and cartels are slaughtering them. We don't even know or care how many mass graves are in Baja as long as beer stays cold at Squid Row.

This already happened. It was more than 50 years ago. A fifty year time warp is NOT an authentic culture, it's by every measure an artificial culture. It is not the "culture" of man to live in a State-enforced time warp.

Which is precisely why I personally refuse to go to Mexico since the current Narco-State emerged. Not that I dislike Mexican culture or Mexican people, but because I feel sleazy and complicit in some odd personal way. But I am not against free people exercising their right to any country that will have them (Cuba and Mexico included). I would guess that travel there would be a net benefit, to impoverished people that need capital to get by. My beef is with governments that subjugate their own people, and with Fellow Travelers and useful idiots that shower the oppressors with tribute. There is nothing "quaint" about Cuban Communism. And there is nothing admirable about misguided Americans who want to preserve Cuban Communism because their vacations might suffer.

If only there was a board for people to go on political rants.

Havoc, I am not ignorant. You may be. How many people in the U.S. Do you know that receive free health care, free education through college including books, rent and food, free housing, one year paid maternity leave? Again, I am not ignorant.
Nothing in life is free but that is of no consequence in this conversation. I would love to visit Cuba. I watched a show once that indicated there are not many restaurants there and that many residents serve food in small settings from ther homes. Did you have an opportunity to dine at one of those residences? Seemed like it would be a cool experience.

Progress is progress. It's gonna be slow. But opening their borders somewhat can only be good in the long run. How long before we get them hooked on meth?

The vocal Communist sympathizers started this shitshow. It should be expected that people straight up saying Communist dictatorships aren't that bad because they have public education and cute cars will be called out. I'm frankly disturbed there are so many of them here.

Can't wait to go back and see Havana again. Last time I was there in the late 50s, I saw Sammy Davis Jr at The Tropicana with Meyer, Sammy and the boys. Banged a flamingo dancer in a dressing room at the Havanna Rivierra that same night. That was 58. Never got back down before Fidel's revolutionaries ruined everything.

All that and you still don't know it's flamenco not flamingo?
Please don't get in the way of his fake story.

wow the response one would expect from an eight year old.
I was talking both sides. And yes we should do everything in our power to oust the Castro's and I think reopebning trade will do that... See USSR and Glasnost and Persetroika.

Yes, but Cuba might not be cute anymore after the evil Yankees bring their bourgeois culture there.

If it offends your high-brow and erudite sensibilities, maybe you should hang out on another thread. It's a win-win. We can continue to educate the Fellow Travelers on the history of Cuban Communism and you can focus on the things that interest you. And by the way, you just starting talking about politics.

The only time I will step foot there is to get our land back from them
You are actually an idiot. A gigantic one. Go back to Cuba, pinko

This whole thread reminds me of a reddit post I saw a couple years ago about some guy who went to Pyongyang on a state sanctioned tour, posted pictures of it, then in the comments section said stuff like
"Don't believe the media, North Korea isn't bad at all, it was great, beautiful, great people, great food, people were happy, its not the hell hole the media says, the media is just jealous because its a government that takes care of its people and is a successful communist government"
Of course the guy got slaughtered by the rest of the commenters because the state sanctioned tour he went on was just of Pyongyang, where only the most politically connected in North Korea are allowed to live, and a very censored tour of Pyongyang at that. The government only let him see what the government wanted him to see.
There is more to Cuba than Havana, just like there is more to North Korea than Pyongyang.
