Dan, I'm not sure, but the privately owned Paladars may have been a part of the owners' homes. I did hear that there are quite a number of residences that offer B&B type settings.

Not really. Grand Cayman, Barbados and many of the lesser Antilles are much different than DR, Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba.

Believe it or not, those guys were kind of oblivious to what was occurring under the revolutionaries holed up in the mountains. They felt that what they had going in Havana was immune to the revolution. They were sure that it would be quelled or at worst, the new regime would be more than happy to take over Batistes gravy train cuts from the mob. In fact, Castro assured them that Havana would remain 'business as usual'.....that is, until a few weeks later when he nationalized everything and kicked them out.

Only the most politically connected and reliable citizens are allowed to live in Havana

As an aside, 'Havana Nocture' is an awesome book about the rise and fall of the mob in Havana. Man, when they had it going in the early to mid 50s it was the Monte Carlo of the Western Hemisphere.

YOU ARE A frickING IMBECILE if you really believe that & it just proves that you have no clue about history. The Castro's did (do) horrific things to a lot of innocent people. Communism is the major source of oppression in this world. Please, renounce your citizenship & move there. You worthless POS. Oh Merry Christmas.

Wife's Great grand pa worked for US Foods (I think) in Cuba. Her Grand pa lived there until he was about 16. The government treated then well too, If by well we are talking taking everything they had and putting them on the boat back to the US.

Why dont you have your Cuban friends and family come visit you for in the states for 8 days?
Posted on 12/24/15 at 5:36 pm to Kevin TheRant
I'll admit I'd be curious to visit simply for the curiousity sake- but holy hell, I can't believe people are arguing that it's a kinder gentler government and the culture of a forced time warp should be preserved.

Hey Buddy, you should chill out on Christmas Eve...you obviously have no grasp at history or current events.
The US currently has a far, far greater rate of incarceration of their social sub-classes than Cuba does...and the US 'capitalist' society has murdered/killed a far greater percent of its social sub-classes than has ever been done in Cuba since it became socialist.
At least Cuba in theory tries to provide health care for its masses...something that the US has not done until Obamacare.
I'm not a fan of socialism/communism but neither am I a fan of unfettered capitalism...both are oppressive systems that have killed many innocent people over the years and are unworkable in the long term.

There is only one problem with the U.S. doesn't provide healthcare for its people. The people who actually work and pay taxes are paying for their own and for the people who don't work.

I don't think that the majority of the people working at Walmart wages make enough to be able to afford a decent healthcare plan...so its not just "working" people paying for their own healthcare that allows them to have healthcare.

That's not my fault. I just got laid off after 25 years with the same company and will lose my health plan on Dec. 31st. I will be without insurance until I go back to work, that is my problem. I don't want nor do I expect you or any other working American to support my insurance.
Posted on 12/24/15 at 7:31 pm to Ponchy Tiger
Sorry to hear that you got laid off. 25 years with one company is unusual in this day and age...I've been with 6 during that time.
It sounds like your health is good...wait until it isn't and see if you maintain the same attitude about not having any healthcare.
Good Luck!

I'm looking up your post history. You must be a hit on the poli board.
Keep fighting the good fight hippy.
If people want to go to Cuba, go to Cuba. If you are a 75 year old man who wants to see his home one last time, how can you shame that person? If another 75 year old is still too pissed to ever set foot on Cuban soil, how can you blame him?
My friends mother travels to Cambodia still. My friend is half Thai half Cambodian. Her Mother ran through jungles for her life in 1975-76 while pregnant with my friend. Fleeing with her Thai husband. Had they been caught my friend probably would have been bayoneted in utero for being mixed and both parents would be in a mass grave somewhere. Both her and her mother have been back. Of course the Khmer Rogue is still no longer in power as the Castros. We're these women being "poverty chic"? Are others who just want to be well traveled?
If it is relatively safe and beautiful? Go.

Not addressing anyone in particular, but OnDemand CNN has a show on Cuba. Richard Quest did the show back in April of this year. Some great scenes in the show.
