I bet their version of you sounds something like "we have a sad-sack relative in Louisiana that has made bad choices in her own life, not been as successful as she wished to be, and projects her unhappiness and dissatisfaction about her life onto us in the form of resentment because we choose a different path".

Listen, I don't know a single person who doesn't enjoy Cuban people/Cuban culture/Cuban food/Cuban music. What's not to like? But when you come here, under the guise of a vacation, to advance the insane notion that Cuba is somehow a better and more just society that the Western Democracies, you better have your facts straight. The 100,000,000 dead at the hands of Communism in the 20th Century would no-doubt be glad you enjoyed your Poverty-Chic vacation. But they'd probably like you to educate yourself about the evils of Communism as well.

How old are all of you people? I ask because a few years ago (probably 2008-9) during a Dominican trip we played golf. Took a shuttle from the hotel. My Mexican buddy heard older guy speaking Spanish and started talking. He was Cuban on vacation like us. He asked the guy if he would ever go back or wanted to visit. This guy must have been 70 then. He got "old man mad". Not at my buddy, just mad. "frick Castro! I will never go back!" He lived it. He was probably in his teens or pre teens but he lived it. He fled with his family and went through all the shite involved. He mad! But he has every right to be.

Folks 2-3 generations removed? Simmer down. Go or don't go. That's your decision. Every carribean island is a facade. Even Puerto Rico is impoverished in areas. DR is sketchy as hell. Jamaica? Drive inland, and see what there is to see. Dirt poor. Not many vacation in Kingston. Cuba is a much more extreme example due to communism and the way they are isolated.

Poli board anti Obama style comments are more ignorant though. Seeing how a "proper government" is run is just foolish. Ask an OLD Cuban how foolish? You might get punched by an old man in a hotel shuttle.

It's not my responsibility to educate you. It's your responsibility to educate yourself. And because so many are intellectually incurious we will always have those who don't value fact and truth and live in blissful little worlds that confirm their own little biases. You get to decide which you want to be, because you live in a country where internet access is not restricted/forbidden and nobody attempts to restrict your quest for truth. Get to it.
