For those who aren't aware, some teenager threw a couple of fireworks into an area which started this massive fire that tore through the Columbia River Gorge. Some of these areas have still not re-opened to this day.
Fiancée and I took a trip there last July and I'll be heading back again in a couple of months. Talk about jaw dropping beauty. Glad they decided to throw the book at this dumbass.

Pointless ruling, should have made him do 100000 hours of community service in the park

I halfway agree. But I bet it scared the living shite out of him and it serves as an example to others. Has to make payments for 10 years after which the remaining balance can be forgiven. All the while he'll be on probation and if he gets arrested in the meantime it'll be bad news for him.

The headline is more shocking than the punishment. 2 fireworks are worth more to this judge than any single judgement vs a Wall Street a-hole.

That’s the stupidest judgement ever. Community service hours for 5-10 years would be a much better route.
Throwing a firework is hardly intentional.
Also, the kid will actually have to earn $37,000,000 in order to even pay that. Basically courts can only take what he actually has so as long as very little is in his actual name, he doesn’t really have to pay anything.

Should've used a flare gun.

In other news, the judge ordered the kid to figure out pi. Then he is to sprout wings and fly around the park, looking for others with fireworks.

Don't see it in this article, but he gave him 1920 hours. It will take him a few years to knock that out.

It's all closed besides the Multnomah Falls viewpoint. They're hoping to have it open this summer but no guarantees.
No matter, it'll look like shite.

Hopefully it's business and not to see that area because it won't be worth it. Even if it opens.

He’s never gonna pay that. Why not just crucify him instead?

I hate it when I involuntarily light and throw things.

I have mixed emotions on this.
Part of me says throw him into juvi so that he can get ready for his new life as a bride.
At the same time, he probably never expected this outcome. Sometimes fires start with no human intervention at all.
The ruling is probably the best. Making him have a feeling of hopelessness will drive the point home.

This is equal to the judge who ruled Harvy Updyke had to pay Auburn back for the damage he did
Never a penny

Kid: Hold on judge, I've been saving my allowance for a few years, let me get a hammer so I can break my piggy bank open...

The court acknowledged in its ruling that the teen will not be able to pay the full amount.
But Judge Olson cited "safety valves" in state law that allows juvenile offenders to stop payments after 10 years if they finish probation and do not commit any other crimes.

If he were a swimmer with promise in Cali soon to be attending Stanford, he would get 6 months probation for fricking behind this dumpster fire. That bothers me more than anything. Nothing is uniform in this so called justice system.

This is a dumb statement. You cannot throw a firework unintentionally.
