I know it's expensive, but it comes with a COLA uplift on top of the salary. I'm not married and have very little family, so the move is "easier" for me than some. I'm under the impression that this is an opportunity that shouldn't be passed up. Am I wrong?

Are they going to relocate you?

The only issue I can see is an exit plan, if you hate it or it doesn't work out, can be expensive to move back to the mainlands.

If you have a few thousand in the bank, given what you said about your life situation, I would strongly consider it.

Don't take your full size truck there OP, hell don't take a vehicle there. Just buy one there. You definitely don't want a full size vehicle, parking is almost always very tight. Tons of parking garages and tons of "compact" car parking spots.

There's really no reason to have a full size truck there unless you have a big arse boat to pull or something.

As someone else posted, the lower economic rung resents white maintainers.

Some sure, but not all. I mentioned earlier, there are some assholes for sure, but I've been here a while, traveled to the other islands (except Ni'ihau obviously) and never had any issues.

I work with a Japanese gentleman from Hawaii. He lives in the states now. I asked him. His reply. "A white person has to be stupid to move there. White people are discriminated against and jobs go to the Hawaiians first, Polynesians next, Japanese next, then it's a toss up between blacks and whites. Lots of racism towards whites.

You're right. He should live in Kentucky instead of Hawaii.

He's asking about Hawaii, not New Orleans. Besides, a grown arse man drinks beer, not milk.

If you go, take very little with you. Most companies won't move you, but give you a stipend that won't cover much. While there, don't acquire much. If you move back, a lot of employers will again give you a moving stipend. Leave your stuff there or garage sell it. If you can arrange living quarters within biking distance of work, you're way ahead of the game. And finally, where will you go on vacation? That one question is a real mindfreak!

North Dakota? Kansas?

ETA: In all actuality, Southeast Asia or to Fiji, Austrailia or New Zealand. I guess if you get tired of beaches, you could always go skiing

been to Hawaii about 150 times, never get tired of it, go while you have the opportunity, Oahu is probably the least attractive of all of the islands, but obviously where the work is, you'll have the opportunity to explore all of the other islands on you time off, go for it!

I passed on a job opportunity in Alaska years ago. I often wonder what I missed out on.
