Is it normal for the interviewer to ask you what you expect to be paid? My friend's son just graduated and was offered a job. However, the company is asking him what he expects t get paid.

It comes up at some point. It's good to know your market worth going into interviews. Hopefully he has a few interviews to compare.

yes

but most of that shite is set by HR, not the hiring manager. they are just gauging where or not he will take a shitty salary to work for them.

I’d counter with “what do you expect to pay someone in this position?”

They are hoping he will lowball himself. If they alreayd offered him, he has the green light to ask for the high end of the range IMO. As long as he doesn't ask for an absurd number, he has the upper hand since they want him.

The appropriate response is "How much you got?"

Ok, that just seems strange to me. When I graduated from college they offered me a salary.

Should ask what grade he is going in at and what the min max range is for that grade.

Then they counter with "I asked you first"
"Well, I asked you second"
"My dad could beat up your dad"
"No way, my dad would kick your dads arse."

HR has the salary already allotted.

If they allot $85K but ask you first and you're foolish enough to say $75K... well....You just earned the HR Manager a raise for reducing salary costs...

Of course... everyone wants to know what's the best deal they can get.

He needs to know what to ask for himself the best he can... and what he wants.

Too high and they may go with someone else... too low and he'll get screwed.

Its a good question to ask... they ask this so they know whether he will be happy with the compensation or if he accepts will he still be looking to leave for better pay.

I love how they want him to negotiate against himself.

Yea, kinda shitty honestly. I had two job offers out of school, neither of which I had to give a number out for. I knew what to expect from my research and would have given a number close to what I was offered by each company, but still.

They might be concerned the salary is a step down but most times they want to get you to reveal your salary position before they reveal theirs...
