I’ve been a Recruiter/Hiring Manager for the last 8 years. When interviewing I almost always ask what the candidates pay expectation is.

As stated before, it can save both you and the candidate a ton of time. If I know I’m topped out at offering them $25, and they are wanting to make $35, I’ll be pretty clear with them and move on. There have been many time a person throws out a number lower than I think they are worth, and I’ll give them more than they are “asking” for. It never works out well for anyone to lowball someone just because you can.

If they don’t want to answer, I’ll throw a range at them. All in all it’s pretty standard.

On another note - My biggest aggravation when at a career fair for recent graduates - I’ll
Start a conversation along the lines of where do you wanna work etc etc. Recent grad answers “I’m going where the money is!!” - those guys typically don’t get much more of my time.

Spin off: How normal is it for anyone else for an applicant to ask how much they are gonna make out the gate. I've recently started hiring and in every call but one, everyone has asked how much the pay is. It's my companies policy to not discuss this until we make a formal offer....is this weird cause it feels odd to me to ask that the first time someone reaches out to you.

Well how the frick is a person supposed to decide if they’re interested in a job if they don’t know what it pays?

It’s fricking bullshite how companies do this. Let it be known how much the position pays, and tell applicants that the final number could be higher or lower depending on experience or performance.

You can't google what a lever-action rifle that Jon Voight went hunting with is worth, though (or whatever).

This is very true, at large companies. If your career involves large companies you're probably going to need to lock in your salary at hire, and then change jobs if you decide you've become worth more.

This is less true at smaller, growing companies.

You can always tell it’s a cheap arse piece of shite company when they talk money early and pay people doing the same work vastly different wages on vastly different plans.

When asked, I’ve always said something like “I haven’t been in the market for a long time, so I’m not sure what I’m worth. You must have many others in this role, so let me know what your typical comp plan looks for them”

And it's also not always easy to google what a particular position is worth in a particular area.

For an example if I search my position in google with Lafayette, LA, the salary range that is given is not just for Lafayette because they don't have those stats, but for all of Louisiana. The 25th percentile to the 75th percentile is a 45k gap. And the low to high is a 130k gap. If you haven't worked in the the field and you don't know your value, those stats don't really give you a great idea of what you should expect.

Mynextmove.org has what seems to be really good compensation charts based on job type and location. I'm retiring from the military next year, so I'd like to know how good these charts actually are.

They offered the job then asked for the number. The candidate is no longer a beggar in that scenario.. You seem confused.
