The hero of Orleans and just a girl of 19, Joan of Arc helped turn the Hundred Years' War around for the French after years of failure against the English. Because they had been defeated by a peasant girl, the English figured that she either had to be a heretic or a witch. When she was captured and taken into English custody, a sham trial was held that found her guilty of wearing men's clothing and she was sentenced to death by fire.

Her final request to her captors was said to have been: "Please hold the cross up high that I may see it through the flames."

In the immediate aftermath of her execution, many amongst the English felt that they had just burned a saint. The authorities who presided over the trial and execution made sure there was nothing but ash left of her body (lest her remains could be used as relics). They ten tossed the ashes into a river where they floated into oblivion.

20 years later, Joan of Arc was famously re-tried and found innocent of the charges. The man who who originally tried and condemned her was excommunicated. In 1920, she was declared a saint of the Catholic Church and is to this day considered the patron saint of France.

Lady Godiva was a freedom rider,
She didn't care if the whole world looked,
Joan of Arc with the Lord to guide her,
She was a sister who really cooked,

Isadora was the first bra-burner,
Ain't ya glad she showed up? (Oh yeah!)
And when the country was fallin' apart,
Betsy Ross got it all sewed up.

Was driving through France a few months ago and stopped in Rouen for lunch. Halfway through eating, I looked over and saw a plaque.

It read, “Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake here in 1431” or something similar. It was the most unassuming memorial for a famous event. Could not have been more than 12”x12” in the middle of a random garden. A large church was behind it but I’ve come across several of her churches.

Was surprised but glad we stopped there.

Found a google pic

You know they didn’t.

They used the witch excuse for political motivations as witch accusations have been used for throughout history. They were embarrassed and wanted her dead and arranged a kangaroo court

In her re-trial, witnesses were called in who knew her. They described her as a pretty and well-formed woman. She was short, stocky, and very tan as she was a peasant girl from the south of France. She had black hair and dark eyes and a light, feminine voice. Her demeanor was happy and she was described as being very witty.

Calling someone a heretic or a witch back then was the equivalent of calling them a racist in modern times.
