You said 70k. I said 35k. How much you want to bet the average salary is closer to my number?

It will be the H1B minimum I'm sure.

however the key for this announcement is that they got a major employer to say yes. That makes recruiting the next company that much easier.

By saying what? We will gladly house foreigners for the 5 years you're here allowing you to underpay them and bring nothing to the local economy?

I guess it is better than nothing....but I'd honestly rather them offer tax incentives to a company that will make a real investment in the state in return and commits to helping local colleges and universities build curriculum and a recruiting relationship.

That isn't what we have here. It's another out sourcing company.

Interesting that you know all of this from a news alert from the Business Report.

Disagree. These will be decent paying white collar office jobs for those with some basic technology training.

Probably will be a huge boon for UNO/Delgado and higher education institutions.

That's just not what this company does. It's an out sourcing firm. This is what they do.

It will be a huge boon for immigration attorneys and a few landlords.

This company will come and go just like film. They'll make no real investment in the state and spend almost no energy recruiting local talent.

Big tech firm bringing 2000 jobs to NOLA.

The rest is assumptions based on the jobs and location. The CEO of the company has made statements about finding locations for cheap labor. So this looks to be a tax incentive move. Based on that, why wouldn't the company be looking to take advantage of every tax incentive? So it's assumed that, like IBM, they'll just hire H1B workers for cheap until the tax incentives run out.

They were always advertising $40k starting salaries. And the project did pump a good bit of money into LSU/SU/BRCC's technology & CS programs. Enrollments have been way up and students are being hired, not necessarily by IBM but last I read they've all doubled their enrollments since the announcement/investment.

In a City that's had significant trouble creating quality jobs, i'll take what we can get and try to build off of it. No reason to shite on this announcement.

I do not know the make up of the jobs (H1-b vs local vs relocation) but i would be shocked if it's over half h1-b's.

We actually have a pipeline of tech firms looking at the City now. If this is reasonably successful it puts us in line for more.

It's not a great catch, but it is better than nothing.

IMO this was definitely not deserving of JBE's hype.

Couple of things. First, it takes two parties to make a deal like this. So while we might "rather" something else, the state can't be so choosy.

Second, this deal doesn't exclude other deals being made. As someone else pointed out, getting a large company to commit could lessen the friction for the next potential company.

I'm shocked that whatever this turns out to be, it's in NOLA (pending confirmation by JBE) and not the Northshore or capitol area.

As a Network Engineer, this makes me feel optimistic. With O&G being down I've been looking at other cities very closely.

I didn't say what was actually advertised. We don't know was DCX is advertising yet. Only that people were definitely saying/assuming IBM would bring in 70-100k tech jobs.

Could the money IBM got have just gone directly to those programs instead? What's the actual ROE?

I believe its the largest single-sourced job announcement in the state's history.
