This is the reason rank and file citizens are upset.
there are some legitimate concerns about air bnb's. I'll admit that. "Safety" isn't one of them.

Well. What the hell does the sign say? The stupid arse article alludes to it and the video purposefully puts a tree limb in the way so you can't read it. WTH?
Does it threaten to kidnap their babies if they rent from BnB or what?

The issue with short term rentals isn't during Jazz Fest and Mardi Gras it is the other 330 days of the year when the property is being used a short term. If there was just a surge during events I don't think anyone be complaining nearly as much.

Why is Airbnb getting so much attention when VRBO and home away have been doing this for over a decade?
With respect to New Orleans much of that decade was spent recovering from Katrina. Property values have gotten out of control in the last few years

This.

And airbnb brings in a ton of revenue to New Orleans, especially on big weekends when there just aren't enough hotel rooms...hotels aren't hurting badly from this, that's some bullshite propaganda. Adapt or die, they are being forced to lower their price gouges on non-event weekends and its pissing them off, but not putting them out of business by any means.
This is good for New Orleans. They need money. Their money comes from tourists. They should make it as easy as possible for tourists to come to the city. Period.
And they need to focus their fricking attention on a completely unsatisfactory school system, crumbling infrastructure, corrupt politicians, and terrible violence.

The title of this thread and the article that is linked, say otherwise.

Outside of that dumbass poster, 99% of the complaints about AirBNB stem from people who buy up property specifically to rent it 3 days at a time all year.

generally speaking there are very few of those

i dont think anyone in this thread has really shown concern for that

if this is shifting people out of hotels, instead of creating new demand in the city, its REDUCING the money the city gets. we dont have data on that though, so we can go in circles on it without proving much

agreed those are priorities, but i imagine there are quite a few government employees that have little to do with those issues. its amazing, but you can address more than 1 issue at a time.

one would say heightens means that its already a tense issue.
there were major articles about it maybe two weeks ago without a word about jazz fest.

That's the most absurd thing I've read.

I wish we did have the data. I'm on mobile so it's a little difficult to find, but I'm sure it wouldn't take much effort to check the property tax receipts for New Orleans in the last few years.
It appears that one me that most of the complaints in that article are contradictory. If short term rentals are driving a property value bubble, then those increased property taxes will likely offset the loss of hotel taxes that they also bring up. You can't have it both ways so to speak.

it would be down the list.
but as a city that is incredibly short staffed on police, id imagine dropping tourists into random neighborhoods around the city theres atleast some concern. thats a concern with or without this, but i imagine it exacerbates the problem some. in a well staffed city i imagine thats far less of an issue.

a valid point.
its a complex issue with strong points on each side. thats why youve heard me say the phrase "create a new and comprehensive short term housing plan" a few times.
i dont think its the devil, and dont mean to sound completely anti-airbnb, just the way the discussion fell was that i could contribute some to that side to round it out.

This is an asinine argument though. I'm sorry but living in Nola the last thing I'm losing sleep over at night are tourists staying in the neighborhood.
what they're arguing is, there are some places now with so few permanent residents, it doesn't even feel like a neighborhood. AirBnB ironically is helping kill the very thing a lot of tourists come to New Orleans for
but hey, those displaced locals are helping St. Bernard Parish rebuild quicker from Katrina. they got to go somewhere

Being cheaper, throughout the history of time, has created more demand.
I, personally, have gone to New Orleans several times just because I found a great uptown Airbnb for cheap, otherwise I wouldn’t have gone at all.
This is the case for a lot of my friends. None of us want to stay in a $250 a night hotel room downtown. We hate the quarter and don’t want to pay that to stay close to it.
