“An Oklahoma judge on Monday ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay over $572 million for pushing doctors to prescribe opioids while downplaying the risks of addiction, actions that state prosecutors said helped fuel the state's opioid epidemic andled to more than 6,000 deaths over nearly two decades.”
Well this can open up Pandora’s box!

I hope it does.
There was a lot of ethically abhorrent behavior from major corporations and individual doctors alike.

Why does the state get the money? It's not like they'll do anything but waste or embezzle it.

Hopefully the judge ensures it goes to substance abuse prevention and treatment.

Oklahoma.. one of the shittiest and poorest states. They'll get right on spending that money the right way.

Hasn't it already been opened? Purdue Pharma is already involved in a lawsuit in Kentucky for pushing opioids. shite they declared bankruptcy because the family KNOWS they are fricked.

How the frick is it J&J's fault that docs prescribe them at will?

It will probably get appealed down, I think the original number was around $17B so $572M shows the plantiff's case is substantially weaker than they thought.

I am a little torn on this.
Big Pharma has way too much power in this country. They have certainly played a part in being legal dope pushers.
Edited because what I was trying to say is that I am for open markets and big pharm is filling a market demand with their drugs and there is nothing wrong with that.
The problem is they carry a heavy political influence.

I'm not sure in this exact case, but other cases the corporations spent millions on propaganda telling doctors and patients alike that the drugs were non-addictive or less addictive than they really were. They also didn't track or didn't care that certain distributors, pharmacies, and doctors were selling/prescribing far more pills than they should.
Doctors are responsible, but not solely.

Phew, when I read the title I thought this was about J&J Exterminating. A ruling like that would have damn near but those baws out of business.

Oklahoma is the 8th poorest by income. And very shitty. Tons of white trash and indians.

The company made billions in profits pushing drugs that they knew were dangerous while outright lying about the risks. Financial penalties are okay but if you want real changes in behavior the people at the top of the company should serve long stretches in federal prison

Come again? This is exactly what the system is for. These companies knowingly lied and purposefully misled to push the bottom line. Justice would be dissolving the company, albeit unfair to the workers that weren't involved.
Why is it when a person commits a crime on here a large segment of the board wants them locked up for life, yet when a corporation does something on the global scale, it's not fair?
(Not necessarily aimed at this commentor or poster specifically. Just a general question.)

And yet food companies go untouched poisoning every American with HFCS and GMO's.
