Fwiw, it is a sign in front of a mural. The mural was around long after the sign was taken down. The sign covers up part of the mural.

Like I said, the shop owner was some Black Hebrew Israelite, the whole area was covered in weird writings and slogans. There was always a sign out front pairing the Star of David and Nation of Islam.

Black Hebrew Israelites aren't exactly "brotherhood" type people

There were two snipers, minimum. I was a kid, but watched this live on TV. The media was more truthful back then, instead of like today. The roof top snipers and guys in the helo's saw movement in the box after the first one was lit up. They fired a few thousand rounds at that movement. They also had police below the box, and they heard yelling after the first one had expired.

The fire chief also was quoted as saying there is no way one guy lit all of the fires. It was physically impossible.

quote:

pg211
" "We can hear people talking up on the roof," Lieutenant Hunter said, calling from the Gravier(Street) stairwell."
"You think this person is talking to himself? That he may be irrational?"
"Negative. It appears to be two people. ...earlier we did hear two distinct voices shouting. One right by us and another farther away."
Lieutenant Schnapp radioed from the Perdido(Street) stairwell. "..when the firing started, it sounded like there were two calibers, one heavy, the other light."
"Same with us," Hunter said. "We heard two different calibers." "

quote:

pg257
"New Orleans fire chief Louis San Salvador was quoted as saying that it was virtually impossible for one man to have set the fires himself. "There is at least one more and he walked away from it," San Salvador told a reporter."

quote:

Chief Giarusso at a post-event news conference:
"One would have to assume that if there was no second sniper, the police fired those shots [at the helicopter], and that's possible but not likely." Giarusso also mentioned the thousands of bullet fired at the shadowy figure seen on the rooftop after Essex was dead. "Many, many shots were fired at this ghost while he moved and, furthermore, the men who were there near the roof heard conversation after the first sniper was shot. I can't believe all of those men were hallucinating." "

My dad was a 1st responder that day almost exactly 1 month before I was born. He never shared this story with me until a few years ago and broke down in tears while relaying the story; 40 years later.

Fixed, Also, you can Google maps search for 1835 N Claiborne Ave
New Orleans, Louisiana. In street view, you can see that racist mural from 2014 to 11-18.

Sounds a lot like Gavin Long who came to BR to shoot white police officers. He shot a black officer first before killing any white officers.

I remember it well. A very good friend of mine was one of the first police officers on the roof.

My dad was with the Baton Rouge National Guard unit that responded.

I wasn't born until 75 but I remember being a kid going down to Nola in the early 80s and he would tell us about the "HoJo Sniper" and where things happened, but we never really grasped what went on until many years later.

Getting here late, just saw title. On that date I was a UPS delivery diver. I was near J.C, Rubber Co. when I was told there was a shooter near city hall. All of that area was my delivery route. I kelp on making my deliveries,
(UPS, I did not need any more of their crap). Got to Charity Hosp. stopped in my normal spot, walked to back, opened rear door when I was informed that he's shooting at me. Took cover in hospital. Shortly after this I watched a Preg women jump from a burning Rault Center near the H, Johnson building. also, later, had a pistol stuck in my stomach and told I was going to be shot. I push kicked him out the door, ran into Poydras St. tried to flag down an oncoming NOPD and damn near got run over in the middle of the street as he passed me bye.
Not long after transferred into feeders (tractor trailers) to finish 30 years. Ain't been to NO since.

My Dad went to a NOLA hospital to give blood and said some guy on a stretcher was shot in the side of his face and had an emesis basin that he was bleeding into. The guy put his finger in the blood and wrote "somebody help me" on the wall. I have never forgotten that story..also that the hotels outer brick on the stairwells looked like swiss cheese for a very long time after...

This was the first event of its kind that I remember being covered by all three major networks. What I thought was the heroic efforts of NOPD had such an influence on me that 5 years later I would start my 34-year law enforcement career.

I knew Alfred Harrell's brother. He was no fan of Mark Essex to say the least. One of his regrets was that Essex was killed by police......thus depriving the family of getting the opportunity to do it, same for a few of the others that day. When I worked for Harry Connick's office out of law school, one of my investigators was a cop who took a bullet that day. Great guy, he passed on a few years ago

The Rault Center Fire was just before the Howard Johnsons incident.

quote:

The first, however, came just a little bit more than a month earlier, on the afternoon of Nov. 29, 1972, right across the street at the Rault Center, which was transformed into a towering inferno when a fire broke out on one of the 17-story building's top floors.

I remember, I was in 3rd grade. It was our first day back from Christmas break, and our teacher brought in a tv so we could watch the live coverage.

Subsequent investigations would reveal that Essex, a native of Kansas who had become disillusioned while in the Navy and who had aligned himself with the Black Panthers, was out to kill white policemen.

And this is why you won’t hear anything from the media making the anniversary of this terrorist attack.

Because it's worth more to point out the absurdity of it than it is to just throw paint on it and be done.

One thing I never understood about all these "radical mother Africa" blacks, If you hate it here so much, just move to Africa. End of story...
