This paragraph is on page 200 of the hardcover version:
quote:

Drive-through daiquiri windows are open until two A.M. You can get plowed before you go to midnight Mass. Fans get wildly drunk at baseball games. If anyone tells you he is from New Orleans and doesn't drink, he's probably not from New Orleans. Louisiana is not a state; it's a outdoor mental asylum in which millions of people stay bombed most of their lives. That's not an exaggeration. Cirrhosis is a family heirloom.

I've never read any of this series before, wife picked it up from the library for me. Guy doesn't have alot of great things to say about Louisiana in general, don't know what he bases his info on. Have yall read these?

I remember drive-thru daiquiri's back in Natchitoches in the early 80's but don't know about the rest of it as I haven't lived in La. for ages. Seems to me you can make those statements about most places in the US (except maybe Utah).

What do yall think?

Someone bashing Louisiana? I’m shocked.

I don't consider it bashing. I am proud we know how to have a good time. Go hang out in Kansas for a week and tell me you don't want to eat a bullet.

I've read several of his books and thought they were entertaining. The one where he talks about the German U-boat in the Gulf resurfacing every now and then was pretty good. He's from Louisiana so I never took anything bad he had to say as bashing.

This is clearly an exaggeration but drive-thru daiquiri stands are in fact a thing. Apparently, if you don't put the straw in the drink, it's not an open container.

Most of us with ambition haven't due to the exaggerated, but not far off target, text you quoted.

Fair enough. But the vast majority of people aren’t getting wildly drunk

I’ve read 4 of that series and really enjoyed them. Heavens prisoners (Alec Baldwin, Teri Hatcher), and in the electric mist (with confederate dead) were made into movies. Enjoyed the former, the latter was meh.

Burke grew up in south Louisiana/Texas somewhere west of Lafayette, and lives in Montana now, which is why a lot of information on the robicheaux series are based in these places.

Robicheaux is a retired detective, alcoholic, divorced and widowed. I think the comment in the perspective of someone who hates himself and the world in general makes sense, and is not necessarily a knock.

He used to live in the Berry on the Teche. I thought he maintained a house in Montana and the berry.

Don’t know about this, but the Robichaux character is also a recovering alcoholic, so the slam on boozing might be in character.

Burke uses this phrase in many of his novels.

I've read and listened to all of the Robicheaux novels many times.

I highly recommend the ones narrated by Will Patton. They are very entertaining.

That's awful, and we have a book board.

Terrible movie and Baldwin as Robicheaux was badly miscasted. Tommy Lee Jones made a much better Robicheaux.
