re: IYO, is someone "self made" if their parents paid their way through school?

It depends on the amount and expense of schooling.
A Ivy League surgeon whose parents paid for their entire undergrad program and Med. School & residency cannot later rightfully claim to be self-made.
A BS-degreed engineer from LA Tech who took nothing after college from her/his parents and gets her/his own PE is more so self-made.

Are they self made if they didn't raise themselves or provide for themselves their whole lives?
Posted on 3/1/16 at 12:04 pm to GreatLakesTiger24
so by your definition, all one has to do is pay for school and they've "made it"?

I may be an exception for sure, but I worked for maybe 12 months total while in school for 6 years. And the 6 years weren't due to partying, 5 years for an engineering degree (pretty standard) and 1 due to fricking up scheduling and having one year with like 4 hours in the fall and 3 in the spring (capstone). I won't lie, it was AWESOME thinking back. Lots of free time, especially in that last year. But I made decent grades, have a good career for now, good work ethic, and am actually pretty responsible with money.

I worked my way through college. Went mostly at night while working f/t during the day. I now have three degrees and make a good living. My parents never gave me a dime for college (they were seriously OT poor) so yeah I could be considered a self made man.
As for my kids, all three had scholarships that paid part of the first two years and I paid the rest after that. They all had p/t jobs that gave them spending money so I didn't have to do that. People asked me why I didn't make them get loans and it is because I think it is just wrong to get out of school in debt up to your eyeballs. So we helped. And we get great presents at Christmas and birthdays.
And yes I consider them self made. They all do very well and have never asked us for money or anything like that since they graduated. Very proud of them to be honest.

Eh, I partially disagree. You can teach your kid how to be responsible with money and bills without them having to work their balls off in college. I want them to focus on the classroom. Don't get me wrong, my kids will work in college. But not during the semester, if I can help it. I don't want my kid focusing on their cell phone bill when they have finals or mid terms coming up. I say all of this as someone who worked full time in college. I appreciate the learning experience, but it's unnecessary at a certain point IMO. Work full time in the summers and save. You literally have the rest of your life to work long hours and be miserable. Why would I want my kid to go through that in college?

I don't disagree with that, but that would mean taking on a full-time job. Do you really want your kids to do that during school? I'd rather they get involved with extracurricular activities, volunteer groups, and focus on their studies.
A part-time job would be okay, but not a full-time job if I can afford to help them out with their bills.
School would have to come first.

You're not self-made in my eyes unless you've overcome crippling student loan debt.

I have a friend who did part time work at the front desk of some dorms. shite was easy and he was forced to study out of boredom. That's fine. But having your kid worry about bills and working while in school is borderline shitty parenting IMO.

IMO I don't care if someone is self made, it doesn't affect my opinion of them either way

I worked full-time during college and it was a mistake. Grades didn't suffer because I'm an O-T genius but it wasted a lot of time. My dad thought it was stupid because he could easily afford to help me but I had to prove myself or whatever.
I regret not getting involved with groups and being more involved in campus life.

I think there's a big difference in forcing your children to have a job and pay some bills vs. throwing them out on their own and forcing them to go thousands of dollars into debt when you can easily afford to help them.

At the base of it this. I have a relative that I'm very close with who will be well off for the rest of his life due to taking over (at least partially) a family company. I would not invest a dime with him. He's not a bad guy or employee, but he doesn't have the drive that would have gotten him there on his own.
But there is a guy that works for my current company who's business was bought out by my company (He's high up with us and really don't know him personally). I've worked under this guy for some time and have seen his work ethic even though he's got millions. I'd put up my own money up in a heart beat if he were starting a company and I had the opportunity. Even though I found out recently his father had given him millions to start his first company. His work ethic and business skills made that company. The money was needed, but it never would have been what it was without him.

Same. I would lose a lot of the closest people in my life if I cared about them getting parental help.
And for those referencing learning how to manage money.. this is only my anecdotal experience, but I've known far more people from dirt poor backgrounds who are terrible with money once they start making it than I have wealthy people with that issue.

My parents paid for fees at LSU and SELU for 3 years, and board for 2 years. Does that count? After college I worked two jobs to survive and prosper.

A college education, even if fully paid for harvard, doesnt get you shite. If you want a good job, you have to earn good grades and work on your career skills to succeed.

frankly I don't know why anyone would even care about this. If you're lucky enough to have the help, good on you.
While paying your way through school is admirable, it isn't really reflective of much.

Yea I missed out on a lot of opportunities because I waited tables and bartended. Had to do that specific job too because no other college gig pays $100+ a night and is flexible with work schedules.
I won't let my kid go that route. Internships in relevant fields, being involved in campus and the community is much more important IMO.

Obviously. What I mean from my statement is that even if I am a millionaire and the kid doesn't have to work at all, they will have some sort of part time job and a bill or two that is in their name to cover.
