always thought school would have been harder had my parents paid for everything. I would have probably partied out!
I had everything paid for at lsu, and partied my arse off and failed out. 4 years later made an agreement to go back to school and any grade below a B I would be paying for. Basically once I had some skin in the game I was on the dean's list until graduating. It really does make a difference

Nobody is completely self-made. It's a silly thing to obsess over. If you had parents that help you pay for school at all, you're already at an advantage compared to most people. There's no need to be ashamed of that, and it doesn't mean you shouldn't be proud of the things you worked for, but maybe just take a moment to reflect before you write off someone else whose experience in life was probably much different from yours as being a part of some imaginary "moocher class."

No. A "self-made" man is someone who usually didn't go to college. They entered the workforce with no prior experience or guidance and became a success.
If your parents paid for your school, but you were successful in your career on your own. Then you're just successful, not "self-made".

Self-made has nothing to do with education or how you got it.
The term refers to a man who has not inherited a business or significant monies from his family, but made his fortune on his own, doing his own thing.
ETA - a "Self-made" man has a significant fortune at his disposal. A tad more than a 6-figure income.
