i finally upgrade my receiver in 2024 after a 18 year run. All the speakers are at 20 years old
I’m about the same. I got a new receiver a couple years ago, even though the old one worked fine, because new technology such as WiFi made the newer one a nice improvement in ease of use. Speakers are more than 15 years old.
If I move, I’ll probably sell it all and go with a nice soundbar at the new house. I bought a cheap Roku one for my mother, and her dialog on TV shows is better than my system with my center channel jacked to the max.

Have Sonos and mix of 1.0 and 2.0.
Oldest speakers are 14yo and still sound great.
Newest speakers are months old and awesome.
Big on financial control / independence. If you are buying sound system on credit and paying 18% or whatever high rate for a year and then looking to upgrade, getting sense you may be on path to financial dependence the rest of your days.
Turn up your volume on no credit, living below your means and investing the difference in cash generating assets (stock funds via ETFs, mutual funds). Your future rock n roll self will greatly appreciate the independence (in spirit of July 4th)!
Good luck.

I still have a pioneer receiver with the original Dolby ProLogic from 1991. It's not my primary Av receiver, but it still works and I still use it...

Only you can make the choice. The reality is you didn't install a SOTA system in 2022 and I know this because if you had you would be on AVS etc listing all your gear and room treatments asking where to spend time/money forst to improve. You can easily spend into the 6 figures for a HT audio system.
There are people that are happy with a soundbar (as weird as that is to me) there are some people with massive systems with many amps each with multiple kW of output. The place that has seen the biggest increase in the last 4 years is auto room EQ eg Dirac Live.
If the question is can you do better, the answer is "oh hell yeah" but you have to decide if the time, effort and money is worth it. One thing to do is try to find a high end HT system that you can experience, then decide if you want a little or a lot more of that.

you can get almost everything you want from a good dolby atmos soundbar these days.
What would you recommend? I want to upgrade my soundbar system that does not do dolby atmos.

You really want to upgrade? Ditch the sound bar and start bulding a component sound system. Sound bars have come a long way and and ive been impressed by some of the higher end ones that cost over $1000.00. I have a Denon in my bedroom that is great for a small space but it cant beat separates. I say get a dolbly atmos reciever and a nice pair of speakers and add to it every year or as your budget allows. After a while you will have a system that can last you many many years. My 5.1 set up is over twenty years old. Ive done some maintenance on the foam around the woofers and replaced the reciever but that's it and it still sounds great.

Whatever you paid for it, you paid too much.

You took out a loan to buy a surround sound system?

I recently scored two vintage Klipsch speakers from 1986 Forte’s to be exact.

I had a Sony Dolby Dts 5.1 system the entire 18 years I lived in my prior house. Still sounded great and only reason I didn’t move it into my current house is I was too lazy to get up in the attic to run the speaker lines. Bought a soundbar and subwoofer combo and while maybe not quite as good, does good enough.

I'm trying to build up a system with 70s components.

I asked for advice on a budget hi-fi system and I bought what this guy recommended. He even found some sales for me.
I love listening to my system everyday. Highly recommend.

Nobody does surround sound anymore. All you need is a sound bar. What is this 2005?

You can get a whole new sound system by just moving your speakers around.
