I've had my surround sound system since 2022, is it time for an upgrade?

I didn't pay it off until 2023. I'm curious how long most people keep their surround sound systems nowadays? Has technology advanced a lot since 2022? I don't know

Keep it. There’s not been some major technological upgrade. Unless you want to go to a wireless system like Sonos.

Is it broken or are you unhappy with it?

I’ve had mine since about 2015 and it still does fine. It’s not too of the line at all (cost maybe $300 at the time).

But I also don’t care about upgrading something just because someone else thinks I should either.

Way longer than that

Only way I upgrade is if I move houses and don’t take it with

I may add to it and upgrade a sub or something along the way.

No it's not broken but I do have connectivity issues ocassionally. But it's an easy fix. Just a simple techno refresh. And it looks new, I keep it clean and shiney. It's a Sony Dolby

It sounds like you’re pretty happy with it.

So why this thread then? Just to see if you aren’t quite keeping up with the Joneses?

i finally upgrade my receiver in 2024 after a 18 year run.

All the speakers are at 20 years old, minus the couple extra Atmos speakers I added for ceiling and 2nd subwoofer. Technology has not really advanced like you think it has. I went from DTS 6.1 to Dolby Atmos, it is not earth shattering

I did replace 120" projector with 120" 4K UST laser projector and new ALR screen, that is world changing.

That’s what I need to do. I have an older projector screen and old Sony projector. Does the screen make that much of a difference? I’m not even sure what kind I have it was here when I bought the house. I’ve already spent a couple grand on speakers so kinda put the rest of the room on hold. Still want to paint change lighting, furniture, carpet and maybe add 2 to 4 more speakers.

Had my Bose 300 soundbar and wireless subwoofer combo for about 12 years now. Works fine mostly. Every now and then (every 3-4 weeks or so) I hear an interference glitch for a couple seconds and then immediately goes away. Not enough to get something new though.

How about you think for yourself? You really going to live your life based on what other people do? Time to be a man

Instead of thinking “how quickly can I replace this” start thinking “how long can I keep this?”

It’s much cooler to say “I got this 20 years ago and it still works well” than “I got this last week.”

I think my dad had most of the same components to his system since the early 1990's. All still works too, Sony and Onkyo I think. Even the rotary CD changer/player still does its noisy thing, sounds like it's rearranging the cabinet changing those discs.

This has to be a bait thread.

You took on debt to finance a surround sound system? It's 4 yrs old, you've paid it off, and you're looking to upgrade already?
