I mean hasn't it always been? I thought even animated underage porn was illegal. And if so why wouldn't it apply to AI generated images?

I’m always so torn on this debate. Same thing with child sex dolls. It’s obviously creepy as frick and I want these dudes in jail, but if they can get off on fake pictures and fake dolls and it saves them from ever needing the “real” thing then it’s a good thing overall for society.

It does not work like that. If anything I would suggest it would exacerbate the issue. Sitting alone and watching porn/fricking dolls never made anyone better. Grown adults who want to have sex with kids have a problem that shouldn't be addressed by letting someone have their needs met artificially.

I understand, but has that been studied and proven true?
What are the other options than waiting for them to do something and be thrown in jail (which then involves a real victim)? They are already watching the porn anyway, and AI porn could help dry up the market for the real thing that’s a good thing. But I get it.

It has not, and anytime someone tries, they're called a pedo-enabler and you get the "see? I told you they're normalizing pedophilia!" boomer social media posts.
You see it all the time with the "MAP" label, which is a term used to start to normalizing studying what you are discussing, so we know what we can do (because the recidivism rate is so strong).
The sad part is there is a population of sex abuse victims who are attracted to minors without acting on it who can't even discuss this issue, let alone hope that science can work on a treatment plan for them. But if you try to stand up for these sex abuse victims, you're ironically labeled a pedo or pedo-enabler.
It's the height of moral panic fear porn.

There was an episode of SVU awhile back where a porn studio was taking pics of adult women and then using Photoshop to make them look like 12 year old girls. If I remember right the porn studio boss was found guilty.
