It’s statistically more likely that an 18-22 year old will be struck by lightning

Than it is that they will die from COVID, yet a majority of decision makers are unwilling to stand their ground on cancellations of college sports. It’s stunning to see.

It’s called institutional liability for publicly funded organizations. What part of that can’t you guys understand?
It doesn’t matter about stats, these schools cannot risk 1 kid dying from Covid under their watch due to the legal liability that would come with it.
Covid-19 is not a normal assumed risk of playing football. Insurance companies won’t cover it.

I guess it is easier to shut everything down instead of the room full of lawyers in the capital addressing this through legislation.

So a conference chooses to lose billions rather than risk how much in liability for a death that may be impossible to pin on specifically playing a sport?

I want to watch football and I don't like them cancelling it. But you do realize that it takes more than just a bunch of 18-22 years to put on a football game, right? Coaches, AD staff, etc. Have you seen the age of some of the refs? The old men moving the chains average about 65 it seems. Not to mention, you can't force a bunch of students into a bubble like you can in pro sports.

Feel free to move those goalposts and we can discuss that. Right now, it's all about player safety. Meanwhile 95% of the players want to play.
Go ahead and convince these school presidents and conference leaders to say they must cancel because of refs and coaches and let's see what is said.

Like I said before, I don't like them canceling it. I'm just pointing out to the OP that the student-athletes aren't the only people impacted by this decision.

I think the students would definitely be in a better place if they were playing ball. I NEVER said otherwise. I'm saying that in pro sports the union can agree to forcing the players in a bubble. Good luck doing that to 18-22 year olds. I sure as hell wouldn't live in a bubble at that age.

But they don’t have this liability with the flu and the flu is more dangerous than covid for younger kids. And insurance won’t pay for what? If anyone has covid they won’t pay for their healthcare?

I mean we talk about how these are kids in one aspect and then another we talk about how they are young adults. Old enough to vote then they are old enough to make this decision to play or not. Let them understand the risk and have them sign wavers to where there is no legal issues. I’m not saying that I demand that they play for my own entertainment but let’s face the facts. Most of these kids came to this school to play football in the hopes of making it to the NFL. Majority of them will not stay until they graduate. You take that away from them especially the seniors the ones that did decide to stay one more year to play and graduate then what’s the fairness in that. My thing is don’t say we are gonna push it back to the spring time knowing that your more than likely just going to end up cancelling it all together. Push it back a few weeks after school starts then make the decision. Tired of this world making knee jerk reactions to everything. Logical thinking and common sense have gone out of the window since this has all started.
