Here is the article.
Here are some of my favorite excuses made on behalf of fatties everywhere by the author and physician and patient interviewees.
You heard it correctly - stigma can cause weight gain.
If only there was a way for patients to combat obesity on their own . . . hmmmm . . .
Here are some of my favorite excuses made on behalf of fatties everywhere by the author and physician and patient interviewees.
quote:
"Doctors traditionally learn nothing about obesity, not in medical school or residency," says Dr. Scott Kahan, who teaches at Johns Hopkins and George Washington Universities, and and is the medical director the National Center for Weight and Wellness, a clinic in Washington DC.
quote:
He says the problem also perpetuates itself: "There aren't a lot of people trained in obesity," he says, and "if you weren't trained in medical school and you didn't take it upon yourself to learn about it, you're not going to be in a position to be an informed, expert faculty member."
quote:
Factors like genetics, hormones, sleep quality and even stigma can cause weight gain. Treating it, therefore, often requires more than just restricting or burning calories.
You heard it correctly - stigma can cause weight gain.
quote:
Also, "there's a prevailing bias that this is a soft science; this is not something we need to teach and people just need to take better care of themselves," he adds.
If only there was a way for patients to combat obesity on their own . . . hmmmm . . .
quote:
Kofi Essel, a pediatrician and nutritionist in Washington DC, says often young doctors aren't coming from the same kind of backgrounds as those who tend to suffer from obesity. They don't understand how things like neighborhood design, food insecurity, and access to fresh produce contribute to obesity.

I noticed right after Christmas here in Beirut Rouge that their seemed to be an explosion of fat people. Fats at Homeless Depot, the gas station, church, and the grocery store.
Only place that I don't see them is at the Mexican restaurant that I and Mrs. Santa Fe (no pics) like to go.
Holiday eating and King cake don't help. Folks need a lot more exercising.

I know people here don't want to hear it, but genetics absolutely plays a role.
i have 2 sons.
one is pretty lazy. has a very easy job, and spend his free time playing on his computer. dude eats all damn day. greasy arse fast foods and junk.
he's 5'9" and might weight 130#. he can hide behind dental floss.
the other never stops moving. like ADHD type. he's also the athlete of the family playing 3 sports up until he graduated last year. Usually only eats one full meal a day (lunch), and sometimes fixes something small (like a sandwich or something) in the evenings.
But he struggles to keep his weight down.
at 5'7" he goes about 175# now. and while not a fatty (like he was as a kid), he sure ain't skinny either.

O/U is 12.5 posts before someone comes in and says they'd look like a skeleton at a "healthy" BMI

Depression can certainly lead to weight gain.

And the thing is, there truly are some diseases that make weight loss extremely difficult. But, unless those diseases are American specific, which they aren't, not everyone has that issue.

I'd practically be a skeleton at a healthy BMI. Anything less than 35 and I look sickly.

Funny how genetic obesity never shows up in third world countries.

Always interesting to look at the fattest countries in the world. Countries ranked by obesity
South Pacific nations are the fattest nations on Earth.
US ranks 14th.
Italy, with all their carb-based meals, ranks 82

Were you purposefully not noticing the fatties everywhere before?

I’m not fat I’m big boned!
It’s not my fault, it’s a thyroid issue!
And yes, my BMI says I’m close to obese, but my BF% sits around 15.
BMI is bullshite as a stand-alone metric.
