YC had 11,900 deaths in excess of normal during this period and only 10,261 have been attributed to Covid.

NYC is still 1,600+ deaths over normal even after ALL the Covid deaths counted for those dates!

A few things are true.

A) It's likely there are more deaths attributable to COVID-19 than the current tally.

B) It's likely the mortality rate of COVID-19 is substantially lower than the case fatality rate based on background antibody tests that are being done.

C) There are a substantial amount of COVID-19 deaths that are being "pulled forward." In other words, people who would have died in the next year or so that are dying now. If 20,000 more people than normal die in New York through June, you must also account for how much fewer people than normal die in the next 6 months.

The data isn't as useful in the middle of the spike.

A) More COVID-19 deaths to come

B) Far more important - how many current COVID-19 deaths were future heart disease, cancer, etc deaths that were pulled forward?

You have to evaluate excess deaths over a longer period of time - a year or so at a minimum.

Yeah accelerated deaths is a very good point.
But how do we treat that now with other diseases?

ETA - I don't get caught up in how the death is labelled one way or the other, that's too political

Lol surrrrrre

Why is that difficult to believe?

The ultimate impact of COVID-19 will be quite evident in a net change in deaths. The amount of COVID-19 deaths, when it's all said and done, will be higher than the net impact of COVID-19. That's how excess deaths work. I don't care how you want to label it - COVID-19 or heart disease is irrelevant to me. The number that matters is how many more people die, over time, than we'd expect.

The CDC will often use states with lower mortality rates to establish a benchmark for a particular disease. They also have seasonal baselines and epidemic thresholds that they use for monitoring the flu during the year.

The initial spike is understandably worrisome, but the true impact typically cannot be measured until it has come and gone.

It’s also cured adults and kids coming to urgent care or ER with the sniffles that just started wanting antibiotics “so they can get ahead of it”.

Data that is three weeks old, was edited by the person posting the picture, and misinterpreted by the person posting the picture?

Do you get all your news from random people on twitter?

In case you want to see the up-to-date (through 4/26), complete data:

CDC through 4/26

Total Covid Deaths reported by the CDC on 4/26 - 49,822

Coded COVID only - 34,521
Coded as COVID and pneumonia - 15,301

Actual estimated COVID deaths today - 63,766

And the CDC states that their figures have a 7 to 14 day delay in them because they get all COVID death information from state reporting - hence the 14,000 death difference.

Yes, doctors across the nation are defrauding the federal government in order to prolong their loss of revenue.

Or administrators across the nation are pressuring doctors to defraud the federal government due to their loss of revenue.

Because things like that don't happen on a daily basis any other time.

Fake news, baw.

The 20% is for discharges only not deaths.

I don’t buy the conspiracy that deaths are being relabeled but I think it’s pretty absurd this is even a category:

“Death with confirmed or presumed COVID-19, pneumonia, or influenza” that doesn’t tell us anything

It’s the same bullshite way they estimate flu deaths in normal years.

The 20% is for anyone coded as COVID-19, U07.1.

If you don't think the hospitals are playing fast and loose with their coding to get that 20% bump, you're naive. They are all hurting, bad, for revenue and will get it wherever they can.

well if you look at the CDC chart that was just posted, they are not playing "fast and loose" with that coding
