This immediately makes me think this person doesn't actually fly that much.

I have seen this in several countries with varying degrees of technological advancement. However, it was usually when you are connecting from one flight to another within a singular international airport. This is different. This is the TSA/DHS database fully active with biometric, facial recognition scanning that you cannot avoid.

I was pretty baffled by this as well. I have global entry and I didn’t even have to stop at a desk to check in. They knew who I was as I walked through and just waved me on through.
For the last year or so I've had the same experience.
But you are not checking in for an international flight without a passport, and the airline wants to see it a second time when you actually board. And to leave another country you have to show your passport. But Global Entry can save a bunch of time getting through US customs, I've never had it take more than 2 or 3 minutes.
Most countries in the world do international travel better than the US, and with better airports.

It bugs me that almost no countries give passport stamps anymore. I went to Bulgaria a few weeks ago and on the way out I asked for a stamp and the girl said sure no problem. But then after typing on her computer for a few minutes she said “sorry I can’t give you one” and sent me on my way. Didn’t make much sense to me.

Most of America’s airports have been around a lot longer than the rest of the world’s. That being said, I haven’t found most foreign airports to be any more or less of a pain in the arse than those in the US. CDG is probably the worst. I fricking hate that airport.

I haven't had to show my passport to re-enter the US from Europe in at least a few years. I do have to show it when exiting the EU so I assumed the US has access to that info. I am always re-entering at DFW so maybe they have had whatever technology longer than other airports.

Flew into Dallas earlier this month from abroad. Face scan for us worked fine. Lady in front of us scanned 3 times before the agent made her show her passport.

I traveled internationally last month and it was needed. Everything was how it has been for a few years now. They did have the facial scans, but they still checked passports at the gates and customs.
I returned from the UK last Saturday. My wife and I are frequent international travelers. Usually we check in at the GlobalSelect Kiosk (only one operational in NOLA) and get waved through at the desk. This time they asked for our passports.

The dumbest part of the REAL ID thing is that you still need a passport.
A state issued REAL ID should be the new passport.

Now, I should say I have never signed up for TSA pre-check
Just my usual PSA for Louisiana folks. If you have a TWIC card you have TSA Pre-check. Your Twic Card has the TSA pre-check number on the back of it.

y the time you reach the U.S. entry point, they already have a database of your biometrics to match your entry. Cameras located facing toward the traveler as they approach the kiosk, cross reference the data and the passport control officer knows exactly what authorities for entry you carry as you approach.
Do they know how much weed is in my carry-on bag?

When we came back from Canada last summer, we didn't have to show it on re-entry to the States.

Fair enough, I've been mostly traveling in Asia. Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, Manila, Taipei. Hell, lots of internal Philippines flights that were MUCH easier than a US flight. I agree with you that age has a lot to do with it for US airports being so bad. And I agree that CDG (and LHR) are worse than the average American airport. But much of it is the useless security we have here that the rest of the world does not.

The beeping had to be corrected by humans - supposedly my passport was flagged - so lord knows what will happen now

We have global entry and when we came back from El Salvador in February they checked our passports. They had our facial recognition on file too so it was a quick check. Not a problem tho, we aren’t breaking any laws so I’m not worried about what info they have on me.

Nor can they get a US passport to “reenter” the US.
