Alternatively you can work in a shop with no AC/Heat or outside doing construction. I did those jobs as a teenager. The office is okay by me.

When I first started working there, the person on side of me IM'd me and I responded verbally. It was just a simple answer. They sent me an IM telling me to please respond to IMs with an IM.
I would have told that person to frick off

I get paid to sit here and produce the occasional TPR report. All is good, UNTIL the the printer goes sideways. Then it's Game On!

Would rather work in a cubical than in an open office environment.

I worked in cube land for years, every morning when all the hogs started showing up with enough perfume on for 10 people I would start sneezing uncontrollably, coughing etc etc etc.
Like a half gallon of Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb was going to make them skinnier.
I work from home now and never sneeze or have issues with breathing or watering eyes.

I work in sort of a cubicle environment but it's actually way worse. We barely even have walls. I'm the new guy and our company is severely limited on space, so I get it. If this wasn't the absolute best job I've had (other than the desk arrangement) I would have an issue with it. I sit next to my only team member but the other 12 people in the room are on a separate team together and I wish they would IM each other rather than practically screaming to each other all damn day. But my boss recently bought me some nice over the ear Bose headphones so it doesn't really bother me most days.
Except Sue, frick Sue and her noise-cancelling proof voice, her smokers voice that penetrates through the headphones at 100% volume and noise-cancelling turned ON! I hate you Sue.

I’ve been doing it almost 7 straight years now. Years 1-4 I worked hard and fast, taking few if any breaks. I started to hit the wall hard in year 5. I’m not nearly as productive as I was in years 1-4. I just don’t have it in me anymore. I’m taking more breaks and just not working as fast when I am working.
Every day I go in I’m thinking that’s the day I’m going to put in that full hard day of work with no messing around. By 10:00 I’ve already diverted from that. It’s like I destroyed that part of my brain that allowed me to do that.

Yep.

I lived that life for 2 years right out of college. I did, at most, 30 minutes of actual work a day (tax analyst). Most of the time was spent listening to stories about everyones kids.

15 years in a cube environment and it has completely changed me. It has sucked the life out of me.

I adjusted pretty well after a while. I'm able to go for walks or runs in the middle of the day, and I've found hobbies that keep me sane. For a while, it was getting pretty bad though.

There has to be a link between depression and cubicle farms.

Well, that's the end of that conversation.

Not really. Its low hanging fruit. The walk jokes are just lame. But I guess for you simple fricks its still funny.
Atta boy, Chris. Way to stand up for yourself!

Yes. However, many studies have shown that the "open workplace environment" is substantially worse for individual employees.
