When I first started working there, the person on side of me IM'd me and I responded verbally. It was just a simple answer. They sent me an IM telling me to please respond to IMs with an IM.
It's because they know you have no honor and will back out on your word. They wanted to get a written record.

That’s exactly how it is where I am. The environment is so stale and everybody just sits in a cube, it is amazing that this company still in this particular segment of midstream liquids transportation business, and it is an oil major.

Sometimes, depending on weather, those cubicles sound pretty damn nice.

I hated when i worked in my home office at a cubicle. My spot originally had a lot of people around but then they slowed switched projects, went onsite, etc and got so empty there were days I probably could have taken a nap and no one would have known.
I’m so glad I am onsite now, although my desk is still in a cubicle in a work trailer. I can always find a reason to go out in the field if things get real stale at my desk.

I’ve been doing it almost 7 straight years now. Years 1-4 I worked hard and fast, taking few if any breaks. I started to hit the wall hard in year 5. I’m not nearly as productive as I was in years 1-4. I just don’t have it in me anymore. I’m taking more breaks and just not working as fast when I am working.
Every day I go in I’m thinking that’s the day I’m going to put in that full hard day of work with no messing around. By 10:00 I’ve already diverted from that. It’s like I destroyed that part of my brain that allowed me to do that.

I'm going on year 20. A few different companies but similar office settings.

Sitting for too long can cause back problems

Nah, I talk to the old ones too. I know better than to dip my pen in the company ink.

I have a one way window that looks out into my reception area that also has a one way window that looks outside to the parking lot.
So I have 2 forms of defense to combat unwanted visitors.

I’m sure it’s unhealthy but probably way better than the workers outside grinding their bodies into salt tearing up pavement and laying rebar.

Cubicles were invented by a man named Robert Propst. Before he died in 2000, he expressed serious regret that he'd ever invented them. He was right.
