The Hammond to Memphis run is fricken miserable bc they stop for all of the freight traffic. Driving is actually faster than that route.

Other than the Northeast Corridor and a stretch in Michigan Amtrak operates over tracks owned by the freight railroads.

While Amtrak does pay bonuses to the railroads for on time performance, if freight traffic is busy they will often sidetrack the passenger train as the bonus isn't enough to offset the delays on the freight.

Nobody's afraid of homosexuals, so stop shoving that imbecilic term down the throats of us that don't endorse said behavior.

I did a round trip with some friends, late 90's, from NOLA to Bham. LSU at Bama trip.

I thought I was going to see every the tail end of every trailer park between the two cities but I was pleasantly wrong. The scenery was enjoyable.

And the last two cars on the train was nothing but LSU people and it was tailgating without the bar-b-q pits. Left NOLA at 7:00 AM and got to Bham 1:00'ish.

We were able to drink and had somebody else driving...

In college we had to take the Amtrak from New Orleans to Tuscaloosa after my truck was stolen in New Orleans. Worst ride ever.

It sucks down here because Amtrak doesn't own the tracks and thus does not have right of way.

Amtrak gets highest priority on freight lines.

I don't get Amtrak.

To go from New Orleans to Los Angeles, it's two travel days each way. To get a ticket that gets you a room the size of a jail cell with a bed and your own bathroom (because, you know, you're spending 4 days on a fricking train), you will spend $3,356. For that, you get 2 and a half glorious days in L.A. with no place to stay.

Traveling on the same days, I can get a direct business class flight and spend less than ten hours total traveling and spend 6 and a half days in L.A. For my time in L.A., I can be staying at the Ritz-Carlton with a room overlooking the city. Total price? $3,734.

Why on Earth would anyone ever get on that train?

Now, the commuter Acelas in the Northeast are a different story. Would ride.

I mean that’s kind of a stretch. I don’t like the look either but that doesn’t mean there’s not a difference between a vagina and a penis.

Acela is way classier than any airline flight.

I took an Amtrak from New Orleans to DC right after 9/11. 28 hours on that fricking train. I guess they never clean the train cars, because I was filthy when I got off. Filthy as in the tub had a line of funk in it when I finally got to take a shower.
