Is this really how you’re supposed to turn left when there’s a median?

It works in theory but what happens when both sides have a long line of cars trying to turn. The lines can’t cross each other and keep the flow going. Which is why everyone turns like the image on the left.

Ideally. That way you don’t have to try and look through the other car to see oncoming traffic.

I do it the correct way as much as possible. But you’re right about it not being practical when there’s a turn lane leading to the turn slot and a line of cars waiting to turn.

Not only will you not be able to see past the waiting cars, you’d be blocking them from turning if you moved forward enough to see.

Still, I get livid when someone does it wrong when that’s not the situation.

Right it’s not practical if there’s a line of cars on both sides trying to turn. How do the lines of cars cross paths and keep the flow going?

That is the most awkward median width you can have.

no median - like the left

wider median (e.g. a freeway with an underpass you go through) - like the right because you have a while before the cars cross

I don't even know how the traffic control works for a one car length wide median, seems perfect for a lot of wrecks.

Think about a car coming from the side street through the median. Should they pull in the oncoming lane?

That said, the "wrong" way seems to work best in most situations.

Better road design could solve the problem.

In theory any oncoming would leave enough space to cross but people are idiots and that doesn't happen.

That, plus the fact that a line of traffic in the second scenario means you can't see oncoming anyway, is why I continue to turn as in 1.

Technically wrong, practically more effective.

We need your people to build us some better roads so turning this way will actually work.
