Tell me what you think. This is an 8th grade world history assignment public school. I say it is very inappropriate. The assignment basically says these are the principals that converted the man who became Buddha. Do you consider this religious indoctrination?

Nah, I did assignments like that in world history in 7th grade. It's not in depth or anything, just a surface level understanding.

What he said. People don’t realize the amount of things most classes have to cover. There is not enough time to indoctrinate anyone. Plus most of these standards have been around for a long time. Chances are you had to learn about this stuff too.

As a Christian, I have no problem with the subject of the assignment. From 7th to 12th grade, I wanted to learn about as many religions as possible.

I have a problem with the monotony and useless details that is part of the assignment. It would have been better for the kids to write a 3-5 page paper on the subject, as my school made us do, versus making lines that connect exact marks and writing words in the perfect spots. That will really help me understand what Buddhism is! Oh wait, it’s the complete opposite of that rigid mindset.

No. It’s not indoctrination.

It is, however, plagued with poor grammar and ridiculous levels of specificity.

Agreed. But then there will be pushback that some kids don’t learn via papers so we do meaningless shite like this to pretend like we’re covering them too.

A poster/presentation project can be just as meaningful a learning experience as a paper. And it can be structured to require an equivalent level of research. This specific assignment does not do that. It is not a project which encourages understanding of the material. It is an assignment which gauges how well you follow instructions.

which is why I said "world history assignment". However, there's nothing in the context of history. It's more literature than history but also more religion than anything.

It’s a legitimate history assignment. Buddhism is a major movement in the world. Learning about the origins is a legitimate subject for a world history class.

Relax. I doubt any kids will become Buddhists because the school tried to teach them a little about Buddha.

My public school had the teacher lead us in prayer daily and stopped class for Gideons to hand out Bibles. The shite didn’t work on me one bit.

Jesus, they give these kids step by step instructions on how to draw the octagon? No wonder people entering the workforce need their hands held for so long.

I took a history of religion class in college. Is this just teaching them what other religions belief?

If so, I salute the schools for doing that. More people need to understand other people's religion. That would help people respect what other people believe.. More..
