He’s a first gen American. His father was an abusive alcoholic that committed suicide by cop with his mom and brother in the apartment when he was like 17. He enlisted right after that. His origin story is like freakin Batman.

Had the opportunity to meet Jonny Kim a year or two ago. He is an incredibly nice and down to earth guy. He is very grateful to be an American and he loves this country.

It's not how much you make but what you do with it. Something tells me this guy has a nice portfolio. Also, astronauts, much less one with his resume, can make obscene money consulting with aerospace companies etc. They will pay to have that resume associated with their company and to have him lobby etc.
While he could have probably made more doing something "Wall Street" etc. he is probably very well off.
