I am coming to the conclusion that, unfortunately, good things can no longer exist at decent prices. This is not a white, black, yellow, purple whatever issue, lower prices attract trashy people, which then brings up problems like electrical cords being put behind locks. I am just so tired of trashy people ruining everything.

Also QuikTrip, at least in the nicer areas of Carolina, is slightly bridging that gap.

Kwik Trip is tGoat of the smaller convenience stores. I know there's an obsession with Buc's but Kwik rules for normal sized stores.

Years ago I had the idea of a "Dollar More" concept of either liquor store or convenience store. Charge a "dollar more" for everything (doesn't have to be exact, could just be an extra 10% markup across the board) from what all the other stores in the immediate area are charging. This gets rid of the riff raff and loiterers and everything else we've come to associate with convenience stores.

AwgustaDawg OFF [ON]

Back in my day, the local convenience store didn't tolerate loitering unless you bought a coffee in a styrofoam cup and sat on the bench out front to talk to the old timers, which I never had any interest in at that age although I should have, in hindsight, didn't tolerate littering, kept the place clean, friendly counter service without a slight Indian accent, would sell cigarettes to kids if they could see their momma through the window and get a wave of approval as she sat in the car, let you pump gas without paying first, clean bathrooms.... the younger people of today who never got to experience peak America, I weep for.

Here in the Mecca there is a “hyper” store concept called Daily Press. American owned!

Fresh food made to order, very clean and the workers are courteous. At this time there are no cigs, beer or lotto, but the permit application in the window tells me that’s about to change.

In the upper mid-west, Kwik Trip/Kwik Star fits this description. Ethanol-free gas too, which is tough to find in corn-country.

Nicer parts of nice places have nice stores

Cumberland Farms in MA, NH, and ME are really nice.

I was shocked at how clean and efficient they all are.

But then I just remembered that those areas are all lily white with almost 0 crime.

In LA I’d still wait in line 10 minutes behind people picking scratch tickets.

That's one of the things I think would have to be removed for these types of stores

upscale convenient store

Stopped in the Perkins Rd Benny's earlier this week, and noticed that they are 1) moving things around and 2) one of the new "things" appears to be a small serving counter. Also noticed they now have hot boudin.

Yes I am old like the rest of TD, but I go back to when that was, maybe, Pak-a-Sac? Wag-a-Bag?

Ch-changes...

Yes, I was just thinking how I could go for a shopping experience with even higher prices.

Doesn't necessarily have to be higher priced. Just a place that has more than just junk food and hot dogs and the usual gas station fare.

Yeah I remember those in NC and they were a step up from most normal convenience stores.

And to your point about Buc's I was thinking of normal sized stores also

No doubt we have great food at them, especially in Cajun country. I just mean in general cleanliness

The 7-11’s in Japan are nothing like gas stations in the south. Extremely clean, fresh food, etc. More like a mini-Whole Foods

Lots in the northeast -- highway side and urban --are like mini whole foods. Not cheap though.

Problem with ones in the south is that they seem to be locked into specific corporate distributors.

Seems they can only carry beverages distributed by Coke et al and couldn't carry something better like San Pellegrino sodas even if they wanted.

NC has Quik Trip
Upper plains has Kwik Trip
2 seperate companies. KT is way ahead of QT - I have yet to see any trash at a KT, ever.

Oh...well yeah. But some boudin or fried okra from some dingy gas station called Boucher's or something, where the linoleum hasn't been changed since Jimmy Carter...gimme that all day.

I don't particularly care how nice it looks. I care about taste
