re: Is the RV life the life for me?

I few years ago I had my eye on downsizing our way too big house, buying a condo and a class c RV. Wife wasn't too thrilled, she said you can buy the house on the lake with the pool and the view if you forget the RV BS.
The house is very nice and the view is spectacular.

Wife (no pics) and I had the same idea 10 years ago, seeing how people drive on the highways now changed our minds on those plans.
To be fair, of you are RVing on the highways then you are doing it all wrong.

Buy one at least a few years old. RV build quality has declined sharply over the last couple of years.
RV Build Quality Sucks

Not if you buy a used one. I retired 3 years ago, sold everything, bought a low mileage used motorhome and hit the road. It was the best decision we ever made. We live on about 1/3 of what it used to cost us to live in our stick and brick home in Abita Springs and are enjoying traveling the country visiting places I couldn't see while I was working 6 days a week. The nice thing about buying an older one is that it has already depreciated, so if you sell it later (if you upgrade or later decide this lifestyle is not for you) you will get most if not all of your money out of it as long as you keep it up. We bought our 1999 36" National Tropical with only 28k miles on it for $15k from PPL (a consignment sales facility) in Houston.

I know people in their 30’s with a family that live full time in an RV locally. They move between four or five campgrounds during the school year. It’s a weird lifestyle, but they’re some of the happiest people I know.
I would kill myself

We’ve seriously considered Workamping, where you work part time at a national park, etc. in exchange for your site and utilities. We watched a lot of youtube and I joined some Full Time RV’er Facebook groups. The biggest deterrents for us are our 2 large dogs and my husband’s height; he’s 6’4”. What I’d really like to do is buy a home with an RV port; I saw some near a lake in AL when house-hunting online. It was a small house with about 1000 sq ft, and it had a garage port for an RV. It would give you a place to stay if you were tired of the road, and you could also VRBO your property when you’re gone. I think they were in the low 200Ks.

Are you experienced campers?
Our plan is this:
- I will retire in three years, wife is 8 yrs younger and a nurse
- Wife will be a travel nurse and will work another 5 years or so while we do this
- We will buy a 5th wheel and have it towed place to place for 3 months at a time...I don't want to spend $$$ for a truck to haul it and don't want to wear out my pristine 2000 F350 7.3.
- I don't want to buy a Class A pusher as we won't be moving it that much and I've seen the maintenance they take
- We will live in small to mid-size cities in desirable places like Dillon CO, Paso Robles, CA, Naples FL.
- Will target woodsey campsites / private that can provide some sense of privacy - not an RV park
- we've camped alot over the years, love it
- we will not sell our home in Va...i have a buddy lined up to move into a guest bedroom and take care of it for us...if this doesn't work out our house is located 10 mins from an amusement park and we can Air B&B it
See you on the road.

Yes and no, it depends on what you get and how well you maintain it. COVID pushed a lot of people into the market thinking they were buying a car. you are now, they need maintenance just like a house. I perform more house maintenance on my sticks-n-bricks than I do my 2020 Grand Design Reflection.

Freightliner truck.
This seems more practical. Can the cab bed be pulled up or something to convert the space into a sitting area? What about showering?

Do it and convert it to a mobile meth lab.

It's a regular RV just on a truck chassis. Similar to this...

How about you rent one for a bit and see if you like it?
Definitely the smart play before going all in. Try different styles and sizes and see what works for you.

My parents (their 50th anniversary is in about 6 months) thought the same thing about 10 years ago. After 1 trip, it sits under their carport at their camp in Toledo Bend. It does get used as over-flow housing when everyone goes up there at Christmas or as a place to stick hurricane evacuees, so it wasn't a complete waste of money.
In other words, I agree with everyone else that says rent one first to try it out before buying one.

I have rented ones few times, and traveled with others that own them. I loved it, but the wife not so much. I have always been a nomad, I hate being tied down owning a house, and have little use for possessions, would rather seeing new parts of the country.

Advice from a Texan - you have no property tax.

Empty nester's now and thinking about buying a RV. Wife is all for it. I love to drive and wife loves to sleep. I think it would be nice to cruise the country.
